The first season of True Detective had perhaps one of the best opening credit sequence of all time. Actually, we’re fairly sure that it did. The credits for True Detective’s first season matched the tone of the show expertly, and made us feel the menace and darkness of the Louisiana setting.

Basically, it was beautiful and worked really well.

Now, True Detective is back. True Detective season two features similar credits to season one, and Wired went behind the scenes to see how they came together. Unsurprisingly, True Detective season two’s credit sequence was put together by Elastic, the same studio that did the first one.

Clair from Elastic runs Wired through the making of season two’s opening credits, explaining that the two seasons — and therefore their openers — have “difference feels, different palettes, different textures.” We’d say the feeling is much the same, especially considering that they are so similar, but the textures and color palates are shockingly different.

Elastic took photographs by David Maisel and Jake Sergeant to create their own California scenery. One design aspect that has served Elastic very well in their True Detective endeavor is their dedication to the art of the composition:

"“You don’t want it to be as crazy and intense as watching footage, because footage is about a series of events happening, whereas this is just about the compositions themselves.”"

True Detective’s credits are a work of art, and season two continues that trend. You can read the entire piece over at Wired, which is something we highly recommend doing.

Next: True Detective's ratings are up.
