Sean Penn Will Play Andrew Jackson in HBO Miniseires
Sean Penn will take on the role of Andrew Jackson in a new HBO miniseries, echoing the network’s John Adams.
For those that aren’t thrilled by the idea of Vinyl, HBO has something a bit different in the works. Or a bit more of the same, depending on how you want to look at it. HBO doesn’t produce very many political series, but when they do they tend to get a lot of attention. Part of that, of course, is due to the talent that tends to be involved.

Variety is reporting that Sean Penn will be the next major star to take on politics for HBO. Penn will star as Andrew Jackson in a miniseries adaptation of American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House. The project doesn’t have an official title yet, but American Lion would be a strong bet. If this sounds at all familiar, it’s because HBO did ridiculously well with John Adams, which starred Paul Giamatti.

If only Sean Penn had been in John Adams as Andrew Jackson; HBO could have its own Marvel-level style of continuity. It wouldn’t make all that much sense in reality, but who cares? The new Andrew Jackson series won’t go into production until 2016, and that makes a premiere date of next year a tad unlikely.
It’s much more likely that we won’t see American Lion — still running with that name — until 2017. The miniseries is expected to stick closely to Jackson’s time as president, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see a bit more of his life as well.

Whether or not the new project will be as widely successful as John Adams has to be seen.
