HBO Can Announce True Detective Season Three Without Rushing It
There’s still no official word on True Detective season three, but an announcement wouldn’t hurt production.
Nic Pizzolatto, and therefore True Detective, is currently playing his favorite game: stay silent and work in the shadows. True Detective is infamous for this, and that’s the state it’s currently in. We all know by now that a third season of True Detective is coming — we know as much from Pizzolatto’s HBO deal.

One of the issues with True Detective season two was that it was rushed. That is to say, it was expected to adhere to a normal television schedule. Being the only writer and showrunner on True Detective, Nic Pizzolatto wasn’t necessarily prepared to work under those constraints. Season three will take longer, and there’s no issue with that. If HBO can afford to give it time, that’s what they should do.

What does become frustrating, however, is that it wouldn’t harm production for HBO to announce an official renewal. They would not have to announce a premiere date; just that it’s being worked on. There would be little harm in it now that the True Detective name is on the mend.
True Detective’s game of secrecy has always been tough on fans. It’s obvious at this point that they will wait until it’s either ready to go straight into production or perhaps has even already started. The philosophy behind this choice is difficult today. House of Cards wasted no time in announcing a season five renewal but that show is run very differently from True Detective.
The only plausible reason for waiting as long as possible, besides fitting into Pizzolatto’s preferred method of operation, is to keep the pressure off. A formal announcement would bring expectation. But it would also bring excitement.

Clearly HBO has determined that one need outweighs the other.
