Does HBO Shakeup Mean Anything for True Detective?
HBO’s recent internal shakeup could affect the direction of their original programming.
HBO is a large company, and large companies frequently change their rosters, to put it one way. There is nothing inherently strange about a cable giant like HBO moving people around; that’s just the way it is. This most recent move, however, could change the direction of some of HBO’s original content, such as True Detective.

Deadline is reporting that HBO’s Head of Drama, Michael Eilenberg, is on his way out. He will be replaced by the Head of Comedy, Casey Bloys, who will now be in charge of both. HBO has a large number of comedy shows, possibly more than it ever has.

That could be why it would make more sense to have one person handle both comedy and drama instead of keeping them separate.
While this decision could have an effect on future drama series, it likely won’t change anything for True Detective. Michael Lombardo is still very pro True Detective, not to mention the fact that Nic Pizzolatto is tied to the network for the next few years. This is one of those changes that may appear scary on the outside but won’t end up being all that meaningful. At least in this case.
HBO’s success with it comedies could speak to a general new direction for the network which has, in the past, been more famous for its dramas.
Next: True Detective should scale back its villain while giving it more direct focus.
While it’s likely that HBO will continue to support both genres in the future, it does seem to be favoring comedy, at least for now. This new change also speak to that.
