Will True Detective Continue to Take Risks on Actors?

True Detective has been known to cast actors not known for dramatic work, but will season three continue the trend?

True Detective season three is mostly an unknown entity. We know that it’s happening even though HBO hasn’t actually said so, but that’s about all we know at this point. Some of True Detective’s future, however, can be guessed at based on its past. Some things will ultimately different, possibly even aspects of True Detective that we have previously taken for granted.

One of those possible changes could be True Detective’s casting choices. There is no reason to believe that major actors won’t be contracted for season three — that is a trend that we will see until the bitter end. What we don’t know is how it will go after season two, which did not give a single career boost to its actors like the first season did nor did it deliver any really standout performances.

Vince Vaughn and Rachel McAdams were the outsiders this time around. Season three is going to have to take risks to succeed, but that doesn’t mean it has to continue this quirky casting trend. To pull viewers back in it will have to, at first, rely on big names to do so. HBO might want to have a larger say in casting decisions this time around, so outsider picks could be less likely.

This is all conjecture. HBO has likely been, with or without Nic Pizzolatto, brainstorming ideas in order to save True Detective season three. Even though we don’t know how far long the planning is, it is likely that multiple names have been thrown around and meetings have been held.

Next: How different should True Detective season three be?

True Detective keeps its details painfully close to the chest, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the eventual casting go a little more conservatively than it has in the past.
