Rumor has it that Pearl Mackie will only be a companion on Doctor Who for one season and her Bill Potts will leave the TARDIS in series 10.

The Mirror dropped a bombshell about new companion Pearl Mackie while reporting on the possibility of us seeing David Bradley reprise his role as the first Doctor. The Mirror says that Pearl Mackie is only going to be onboard the TARDIS for one series.

The already beloved Bill Potts will only get one season of adventures on Doctor Who. The implication is that Potts will leave the show in the final episode of series 10, and then Capaldi will be alone, or possibly with other Doctors, in the Christmas special.

Although this is disappointing, since we fell for Pearl Mackie in the very first episode of series 10, it might also be for the best. Some of our favorite companions ever were short-term companions. Kylie Minogue’s Astrid Perth was wonderful and we only saw her for one Christmas special. Some might even suggest that Clara was better as souffle girl than she was when she became a regular.

The other issue is that we know that Peter Capaldi’s time as the Doctor is at an end. As much as we would love to see more of Pearl Mackie’s Bill Potts maybe she should leave with her doctor. We just experienced Clara’s trials of dealing with a new Doctor, do we need to see that again?

It is always easier when the Doctor and a companion start off fresh together. So perhaps the short term companionship of Bill Potts is for the best. Still, it makes us a little sad since we feel like she really brought out the best in Peter Capaldi’s Doctor.
