This week’s episode of Doctor Who was one you’ve seen before. It was a brand new episode, but you’ve also seen it already. This was the episode where the new companion realizes that the Doctor isn’t just a man and has done some horrible things. The companion questions whether the Doctor is really good or bad and eventually must decide if they can handle being on adventures with someone like the Doctor. SPOILER ALERT: The companion always decides that they can deal with it.
In the case of “Thin Ice”, the moment of conflict and questioning was brought on by The Doctor not reacting to the death of a young boy… besides being glad to get his sonic screwdriver, which the boy had stolen, back. This caused Bill to have a minor freak out and question the Doctor on how many people he had seen die and then on whether he had ever killed anyone. It was luckily a very short meltdown and by the end of the episode, we were back to a happy companion and Doctor.
If series 10 is truly a restarting point where new fans can jump into the series you have to have this episode, but it’s the first episode of this series that we felt wasn’t a solid winner. There’s nothing wrong with “Thin Ice,” but you won’t come away wanting more from it.
Here’s hoping that we get back on track next week. We give Doctor Who “Thin Ice” a C.
