Fargo: How deep does the Mystery of Gloria’s Stepdad Go?

A long-lost Stussy? A famous science fiction writer? What’s the deal?

Doesn’t it feel great to have Fargo back? Ahem. Well, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way,  we can talk about one season 3’s central mysteries – who is Gloria’s stepdad? Granted, we didn’t see that playing heavily into the central plot, but that’s the way it looks like it’s going to go. Viewers that have been paying attention will have noticed that his name, Ennis Stussy, is the same surname of Emmitt and Ray. Of course, that could be a giant coincidence (or even a red herring) but what fun would that be?

Episode 3 of the third season, ‘The Law of Non-Contradiction’ will tease this little mystery even further. That much is made clear in the preview, which finds us returning to the 70’s, an era that was previously explored in season 2. Gloria thinks that Ennis went by a different name, but not only that, he was also a science fiction writer.

More from Fargo

What significance could this have on the overall plot? That’s a great question and not one that we can answer just yet. The potential fallout of him being related to the Stussy brothers is far easier to parse at this point, and that could lead to Gloria being owed some sort of inheritance. There is already a lot to keep track of this season, and the preview doesn’t even really such on the Varga (unless that hand has something to do with, and we fear it may) nor does it touch on the brewing war between brothers. That leads us to believe that ‘The Law of Non-Contradiction’ is very much going to focus on Gloria and her family.

If Fargo is going to flashback to the 70’s, that could mean that we’ll be seeing our first links to the previous season. Season 2 took place entirely in the 70’s and followed a difference cast of characters, but there’s no telling who Ennis was in touch with back then.  Ennis’ past is almost the most interesting storyline going on right now, and that’s really saying something.
