Will & Grace Recap: “Who’s Your Daddy”

Will & Grace might have picked up where it left off, but “Who’s Your Daddy,” works as a reminder as to how much time has passed.

This week on WIll & Grace, Will and Jack face off against each other while Karen and Grace do the same with all four questioning their self-worth. It may not have hit the highs of the premiere, there’s doubt that this sitcom is at the top of its game, and it’s no surprise that it has become a sensation all over again.

It turns out that Jack doesn’t have the best time picking up guys at a bar in “Who’s Your Daddy,” while Will succeeds easily. Turns out that one of the men he was hitting on called him a  “daddy,” much to Jack’s disgust while Will is able to pick up the young twenty-three-year-old Blake played by Ben Platt. Their storyline is the most fun of the episode, with both men struggling with their age. At first, Will is ecstatic to be dating a younger guy, without thinking about how the age gap actually affects the relationship.

However, on his first date with Blake, he learns that the young man came out to two loving supporting parents and was born in the same year as Madonna’s song “Borderline”. While this all accents the age difference, it also turns a typically lovable Platt into a horrible millennial. Just as the two are going to bed, Blake reveals that he isn’t even aware of the history surrounding the fight for gay rights, which leads to Will skipping the hookup to instead give this ignorant guy a lecture.

Meanwhile, Jack is repulsed to be mistaken for his actual age so he’s on the hunt to be perceived as a twenty-five-year-old. With a little help from Karen, he gets suited up with a shirt to tuck in his stomach, and two magnets to pull his skin back. While he looks ridiculous in “Who’s Your Daddy,” Jack does manage to snag a younger guy and lure him back to his apartment. In a particularly funny bit, Jack takes the magnets off to put in his pockets, but they’re so strong that his legs get stuck together along with Will’s scissors. After throwing on some terrible makeup in the dark, he tries to seduce his hookup but the guy goes screaming from his apartment after getting one look at Jack’s face.

Karen, on the other hand, is trying to find out what her self-worth is in “Who’s Your Daddy,” after one of her maids ask for a raise. Unfortunately, it’s not Rosario (the actress is retired), but nonetheless, it’s still sad to not see her return. However, she then goes to Grace asking for a raise herself only to be turned down. As her friend points out, Karen is ostensibly useless at work and as revenge, the latter locks them both in her new shower. On top of that, Karen has the drain turn off and the shower on, setting a ticking clock on how long the two have. Finally, Grace admits how much Karen means to her and that she’ll get her raise but all of that goodwill is erased when it turns out the “off” code word for the shower turns out to be “Grace Adler.”

Overall, “Who’s Your Daddy,” is a fun episode of Will & Grace that serves as a reminder that the show has evolved. Yes, the chemistry is still the same and the characters are still living in the same spots, but they’ve changed since the show went off the air. It works as an episode that displays just how the series has evolved with the times.
