The Gifted Recap: “got your siX”

The Gifted, “got your siX,” splits up the girls and the guys this week with each getting their own problems to deal with.

Unfortunately, the guys get the better storyline this week, mainly because they get to see most of the action. The girls are left carrying the more grounded side of The Gifted as they argue whether the kids should be learning to fight or preparing for life after the war. However, with Garet Dillahunt’s villain getting more screen time this week, things aren’t looking great for the Mutant Underground.

Reed, Andy and Marcos hit the road to go sneak into the Baton Rouge Justice building. They get sidetracked by the larger police presence, which forces the boys to take a little detour in the woods. Reed and Andy finally get some father-son bonding in “got your siX,” but it unfortunately leads to an uncomfortable confrontation.

Turns out, Andy blames his father for the bullies attacking him in the pilot and is angry that he seems uncomfortable by his powers. Reed is quick to point out that he doesn’t want his son to hide his abilities but to use good judgement when it comes to using them.

However, it seems like Andy is destined to go down a darker path when the young mutant reveals that it “feels good” when he’s using his destructive powers.  Marcos encourages Reed to continue pushing Andy to talk and the two fathers bond over parenting skills.

The three easily break into the Justice building despite it being heavily guarded, however, Andy gets frustrated when he’s sent back to the truck after breaking the wall down. Marcos points out they don’t have time to argue, and he races upstairs with Reed to get their hands on the files of missing mutants.

While they manage to escape Sentinel Services to get back to the truck in “got your siX,” they run into more trouble because the Federal Agency has a blockade prepared for them. Thankfully, Lorna has been training the younger mutants back at HQ to prepare for combat, including Lauren and her new friend, Wes. She quickly enlists the two even though she’s butted heads with Caitlin throughout the entirety of the episode.

The three of them make way to the barricade where Lauren uses her powers to form a ramp for the truck to fly over the group of armed men, Polaris deflects all of the bullets, and Wes makes the illusion of two trucks going in opposite directions while the real one escapes.

At HQ, John is facing some serious problems and begins to crack under the pressure. Up until now, he’s been nothing but level-headed and “got your siX,” finally gives the audience a look at the broken down John. He’s dealing with massive overpopulation problems, the guilt over leaving Pulse behind, and Blink storming off into the unknown.

Also revealed this week is the fact that the X-Men warned him of an oncoming war and with the newfound knowledge that mutants are hunting other mutants, John is worried that they might not win. Since Jace Turner has enlisted Dr. Campbell (known as the villain Ahab in the comics) to help him track down the Mutant Underground, it seems like a whole lot of trouble is headed the group’s way. Even Agent Turner seems to be aware that he’s made a deal with the devil in order to ensure his reinstatement within Sentinel Services.

Next week’s episode looks like it’s going to focus on Marcos’ deal with the mafia from earlier this season. Hopefully it won’t stall the momentum made in “got your siX,” because Dr. Campbell has been such an interesting character despite the limited screen time.
