The Walking Dead Season 8, Episode 4 recap: ‘Some Guy’

So far this season, The Walking Dead has shown Rick and company take the battle to The Saviors. Throughout the first three episodes, the citizens of The Hilltop, Alexandria and The Kingdom enjoyed big wins – although there were some severe losses along the way. However, last week’s episode ended with a massive blow to The Kingdom as King Ezekiel and Carol walked into a trap, and The Saviors gunned down almost their entire army. This week, nearly the whole episode showed the ramifications of that tragedy.

Here is a look at what happened in episode four of season eight of The Walking Dead, “Some Guy.”

Ezekiel Leading His Troops Into Battle

The episode bounces around in time somewhat. Some scenes in this episode flashed back to King Ezekiel leading his people into the battle. Ezekiel delivers his now legendary “I still smile” speech while giving everyone the hope that they need to trust in him and to follow him.

There is also a scene later in the episode where King Ezekiel and Carol are speaking about heading into battle. When Carol asks if he had ever fought before, meaning before they met, Ezekiel said that he did with Shiva by his side but said that he had prepared for this battle. When Carol continued to show doubt, Ezekiel said that he used to be a zookeeper and decided to become a hero to survive. He then asked if Carol was always brave and strong or if she also chose to become a hero.

Carol, who Walking Dead fans know was an abused wife who had to learn to fight over time, understands exactly what Ezekiel is talking about, and the two come to an understanding.

He has won over all his people, and Carol seems to be coming around as well. However, after that first flashback, the scene cuts to the aftermath from last week’s episode where the Saviors gun down Ezekiel’s army.

That leads to Ezekiel waking up and seeing his troops are all dead in a brutal scene. He also has an injured leg and is trying to crawl away when all the fighters from the Kingdom return to life as zombies and start to lumber towards their King. It is a horrific scene and one that shows that his promises were false and hope is running out.

Carol Is Still A Bada**

While King Ezekiel is outside, crawling away from the oncoming Walkers, Carol has made it inside the building and is looking for the attackers. She slips into the ceiling and waits before gunning down a handful of Saviors. However, there are too many, and she has to run while they load up all the weapons and prepare to move out.

While Rick and Daryl failed in their mission last week to get the weapons, Carol has found them, but they hopelessly outnumber her. She makes it outside to where the Saviors are loading the guns into a truck to take back to Negan. This moment is when Carol has a decision to make.

She opens fire but is pinned down, alone, behind a truck while the Saviors still have a handful of men alive and all with guns aimed at her position. Carol then agrees to surrender and says she will give up her friends if they allow her to live. They agree, but when one of the Saviors comes over, she grabs him and puts a knife to his throat.

Instead of giving up, the Saviors just gun down their friend to get Carol. However, it was all a ruse as Carol hits the button to open the gate without the Saviors realizing what she was doing and then she waits as the gate opens and the Walkers come in to attack.

With only two Saviors left, Carol has a decision to make. She can fight it out with them to try to get the guns, or she can save Ezekiel, who she sees fighting outside the gate. She chooses to save Ezekiel as the Saviors take off in the truck with the weapons.

Saving King Ezekiel

Before Carol started her gun battle with the Saviors, Ezekiel was taken hostage by one of the Saviors who said that Negan wanted him, Maggie and Rick and planned to tie them up to the gate as an example to anyone who crossed him. He planned to take Ezekiel back to Negan.

However, they couldn’t get to the trucks because the gate was locked, so the Savior decided just to kill King Ezekiel and take Negan his head. Before he could do this, Jerry shows back up and drives his battle ax down, splitting the Savior in half. It was awesomely gory and spectacular.

Jerry then saves King Ezekiel from oncoming walkers as well. It is an interesting scene because Jerry continues to thank Ezekiel and call him Your Majesty even when Ezekiel says he doesn’t deserve the title anymore. According to Jerry, he “needs” to look at Ezekiel as the King.

When they are fighting the walkers, and it looks like all hope is lost, Carol comes to the rescue, and they withstand the attacks. When Ezekiel asks if the Saviors escaped with the weapons, Carol tells them not to worry about it.

Rick and Daryl To The Rescue

Last week, Rick and Daryl decided to take off to find the weapons after a surviving Savior told them where they were. That location was where Carol and Ezekiel were under siege. The final two Saviors took off in their jeep with the weapons, but Daryl on his motorcycle and Rick in a jeep took off after them in hot pursuit.

After some nifty driving and a fun chase scene, they kill the one in the back with the machine gun and then Rick leaps into the jeep with the last surviving Savior, stabs him in the gut and throws him from the vehicle before crashing into the woods.

Rick and Daryl finally got the guns they were searching for last week.

One Final Death

While getting the guns was great, the episode ended in a very depressing manner. Just when King Ezekiel was ready to give up and told Jerry and Carol to leave without him (they refused), Shiva leaped out of the woods and attacked the zombies that were lumbering after them.

As fans in the comics know, and as we predicted, this is where Shiva met her end. Just as in the comics, Shiva gave her life to save King Ezekiel, buying them time to escape as the walkers overpowered her and killed the beloved tiger.

By the end of the episode, King Ezekiel, Carol and Jerry all walked back into the Kingdom alone – the last survivors. A young boy that Ezekiel told to stay strong approached his King and received a kind pat on the shoulder before Ezekiel walked by his people, a broken man, and left them shocked.

King Ezekiel is not “just a guy” and he has now lost everything.
