Marvel’s Inhumans unofficially canceled by ABC

Inhumans was one of the biggest flops in Marvel’s usually successful adaptations, and was a huge disappointment for ABC.

While fans have speculated for months that the series would be canceled, it appears like the network has quietly decided on the show’s fate. Removing any trace of the short-lived superhero show off of the ABC press website, it seems like it’s going to be a one and done for this adaptation.

The cancellation news likely won’t come as a shock to viewers who actually tuned into season one. From the weird IMAX premiere to the lukewarm reaction by critics, Inhumans seemed dead on arrival by the time it hit ABC.

Scott Buck, the showrunner behind Marvel’s other critical flop Iron Fist, once again proved unable to produce a series up to the high standard the other comic book shows have achieved. Marketed as a high-budget adventure with the Royal Family, Inhumans never quite lived up to expectations. Poor special effects, as well as writing and directing dragged down almost every episode. And frankly, the actors deserved better.

Nevertheless, the cancellation did upset a small faction of fans who were hoping for a second season. A petition on Change.org  has racked up a little under five hundred signatures with the hope that they can change ABC’s mind. While it seems unlikely, the group did point out that Agents of Shield struggled a lot in its freshmen run but has improved greatly since then. It’s a solid argument for renewal considering Inhumans had so much potential that was squandered but fans shouldn’t get their hopes up.

It always seemed like ABC was pitting their two Marvel series against each other with the stronger one emerging victorious with a renewal. After the network boss, Channing Dungey, said she was “cautiously optimistic” about a sixth season for Agents of Shield and that it has been the strongest year creatively for the series, it seems like the fate of Inhumans has been sealed.

Sorry Inhumans fans, it looks like the adventures of the Royal Family will end after only one season. Maybe in a few years, Marvel will try adapting those comics once again, but for now, fans will have to hope that ABC will have some of the characters from Inhumans cross over to Shield.
