Daredevil season 3 is shaping up to be quite exciting with the inclusion of a character from the “Born Again” story-arc.

When last we saw Matt Murdock — Daredevil himself — he was lying in a convent after the destruction of Midland Circle in The Defenders. He was being taken care of by nuns, one of whom says, “Get Maggie. Tell her he’s awake.” So, who is Maggie and why would her name be so important for Daredevil season 3?

Well, as it turns out, Sister Maggie is actually Matt Murdock’s mother. A character introduced in the comics when Daredevil seeks her out in the Born Again story-arc. Now, thanks to a report from Deadline, it appears as if Maggie will be brought to life in season 3 via The White Princess actress Joanne Whalley.

Executive Producer Jeph Loeb noted the showrunners for Daredevil were “big fans of Joanne’s work and are fortunate that someone of her caliber will be joining our already talented family,” and new showrunner Erik Oleson was highly complimentary as well.

"Joanne is a rare talent and a terrific creative collaborator. Watching her bring her role to life has the writers all pinching ourselves."

With Matt Murdock on the mend, and with season 3 shaping up to be an adaptation of Frank Miller’s “Born Again” arc, fans should expect a broken hero, in Daredevil. Vincent D’Onofrio is returning as the Man without Fear’s arch-nemesis, Kingpin, who will use his considerable reach to break Murdock at every turn.

Depending on how much the show will delve into “Born Again,” we could even see a paranoid version of the masked vigilante, and this could be one of the reasons he turns to his mother.
