Happy renewed for second season on SyFy

SyFy announced on Monday that they have renewed Happy for a second season.

One of the strangest shows to hit television in 2017 was the SyFy series Happy. It was easy to see why it was so weird, with DC Comics bizarro writer Grant Morrison teaming with Brian Taylor, one-half of the directing team that brought us Crank and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Add to that the fact that Law & Order SVU actor Christopher Meloni brought back the spirit of his character from Harold & Kumar movies and Patton Oswalt voices an imaginary blue winged horse named Happy.

If that all sounds off-the-wall, you are about halfway there.

Happy tells the story of an alcoholic, corrupt cop named Nick Sax (Meloni) who becomes a hit man. After a hit gone wrong, he starts to envision the imaginary blue winged horse Happy and things start to go off the rails. This was a show that was no surprise for fans of Meloni’s movie career but might be a shock for those who only knew him from Law & Order SVU.

The first season saw Happy helping Sax try to find and rescue a girl kidnapped by a man dressed as Santa Claus. Happy was the girl’s imaginary friend and came to Nick for help. The series then got very dark and deranged, and the season one finale arrives on Jan. 31.

When asked about renewing Happy for a second season, the president of entertainment networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, Chris McCumber said that Happy “disrupted the TV landscape” and if fans thought season one was crazy, he can’t wait to see what they think of season two.
