DC is continuing to add to their roster of original superhero shows for the streaming service with a series revolving around Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, titled Metropolis.

Metropolis has already been ordered straight to series with thirteen episodes making up its first season. John Stephens and Danny Cannon, the executive producers of Gotham, will be in charge of bringing this prequel series to life for a streaming service that needs a big win.

Smallville was a hit for The CW, and SYFY is hoping to draw in viewers with Krypton, so DC is hoping lightning will strike three times for their new streaming service. Unlike the other two which focused on Superman or his family, Metropolis will hand over the spotlight to Lois Lane and the villainous Lex Luthor.

"Set in the wondrous and awe-inspiring City of Tomorrow before the arrival of Superman, Metropolis follows Lois Lane and Lex Luthor as they investigate the world of fringe science and expose the city’s dark and bizarre secrets."

With The X-Files finishing up what could be its last run, it looks like Metropolis is trying to take over as the next supernatural investigation show. However, it’s unclear whether Lois and Lex will be working together or if it will be the former investigating the latter. Without Superman, it’s impossible to tell if the series is planning to keep the backstory of all three growing up together as friends or if they’ll be going a different route.

Fans have had mixed reactions to the news of a Superman prequel because many assumed he would be getting his own series. Tyler Hoechlin has done a fantastic job on Supergirl and since it is the Man of Steel’s 80th Anniversary this year, it would make sense for DC to commission a television show to commemorate that.

At the very least it would have been fun to see Lois, Clark, and their son Jon having adventures as a Superfamily. For now, the fans will have to wait and see if this show will work without the famous hero and how exactly it will fit into the DC Television Universe.

The series won’t begin production until 2019, however, casting has been rumored to already begun. A few weeks ago a casting call was released for Lois Lane that was originally thought to be for Supergirl but was most likely for Metropolis.
