Netflix lands Ryan Murphy series ‘The Politician’ after intense bidding war

Ryan Murphy joins the Netflix family–with Ben Platt in tow
After an intense bidding war against Amazon and Hulu, Netflix has secured a deal for a Ryan Murphy series, The Politician. The series is an hour-long comedy that will bring in Murphy’s partners-in-television, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. Furthermore, The Politician has been given a straight-to-series order for two seasons!
Currently, Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen) has been confirmed to star in this upcoming series–with Gwyneth Paltrow and Barbra Streisand currently in talks to join. Um, say what?! Snagging this series is being referred to as “the biggest TV package of the year” and had Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu pitted against one another for an entire week.
Ryan Murphy is known for creating remarkable, controversial shows that highlight social and political commentary in unique ways. The Politician is no exception! Murphy will direct the pilot (as he does for all his shows) and will take a comedic approach to social commentary. Pending on Streisand’s deal, she would join the production team (and direct!) alongside starring in the series. Paltrow is expected to take on the role of producer, as well–deal pending.
So what do we know about this hot new show? Well, not much. Details regarding the synopsis and characters are being kept mum, however, Platt’s character will be the politician at the center of the story. Murphy himself has been tight-lipped.
"I haven’t made a decision of where I’m going to go, I’m going to sit back and wait."

But wait, there’s more! The sole reason for the intense bidding war was because this series will contain musical numbers. With Platt confirmed, and Streisand and Paltrow pending–this is shaping up to be one hell of a series.
The Politician was in the works for a year with Murphy and Falchuk writing the script. Production is tentatively being set to start sometime this summer (we can’t wait!). After Murphy’s recent success with Fox drama series, 9-1-1, it is no surprise that his shows are becoming quite the hot commodity.
Along with The Politician, Netflix is also bringing Murphy’s Ratched to its streaming service, starring Murphy favorite, Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story). It is safe to assume that Netflix just might be Ryan Murphy’s new home–especially considering his deal with Fox is ending later this year.
