New animated Constantine series gets a premiere date
Fans of NBC’s short-lived show about DC’s occult detective will be excited about the CW’s announcement for the premiere of their new animated Constantine series.
While Matt Ryan’s beloved hero has made live action appearances on Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow, it’s exciting to see his series continue despite the cancellation. The demon hunter has continued to be one of the more popular DC Comics heroes, and the CW is definitely happy to continuing offering a home to all of the comic book shows.
Set to appear on the season three finale of Legends of Tomorrow on March 15, fans of Constantine have quite a bit to look forward to this month. The animated series will debut on the CW Seed on March 24, and it’s already been teased as much darker than the NBC show. No longer tied to network constraints, the new series will stay much more faithful in both tone and plot to the Hellblazer comics.

A first-look at the animated web series was released in October of last year which saw Matt Ryan easily step back into the role of the titular hero. The animation looks eerily similar to the Justice League Dark film, which also features Ryan returning to voice the character.
Well-received by critics, there are probably plenty of fans who are hoping the new series will take some characters from the comics and place them into the new show. Since this is animated, it definitely allows the CW a little more freedom with casting, such as using possibly one of the biggest names in the comic books universe: Zatanna.
The show will be written by J.M. DeMatteis, one of the most prolific comic book writers in recent years. While he hasn’t written for the Hellblazer line, DeMatteis has plenty of history writing for DC Comics. It’s safe to say that he should have a good understanding of how to adapt a character like Constantine into an animated series.

Like all of the Arrowverse shows, the web series will be produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and one of the creators of Constantine on NBC — David Goyer.
While it’s been clear that Constantine will exist within the Arrowverse, it still hasn’t been announced what Earth it will take place on. If this animated version isn’t the same as the live-action one than the door could be left over for Constantine to join Legends of Tomorrow full time.

Even if he doesn’t get to stick around on any of the live shows, fans of the series will still be happy to see some incarnation of the hero live on starting March 24 on the CW Seed.
