Netflix just released its first official full-length trailer for their revival of the 1960’s TV show, Lost in Space, set to be released on April 13.

While the overall premise appears to be largely the same from the original show, the new Lost in Space trailer makes it clear there will be some changes.  The tone is noticeably darker and Dr. Smith is now a woman who appears to be more mysterious than her ’60s counterpart. It also looks like the robot has naturally been given a more futuristic design.

The production values also look surprisingly impressive for any TV show — much less one on Netflix.  The planet the Robinsons have found themselves stranded on looks similar to one of the locations used for Interstellar.  This is another significant change from the original which had a relatively small budget which was not uncommon for sci-fi shows at the time.

The classic show — while achieving a cult following — has had somewhat of an underwhelming legacy.  Lost in Space achieved a semi-successful three-season run before being abruptly canceled by CBS, leaving the ultimate fate of the characters unresolved.

Some folks might remember that this isn’t the first time the show has gone through a reboot over the years, though so far none have been successful.

Back in 1998, New Line Cinema attempted to revive the brand with a feature film that starred the likes of William Hurt, Matt LeBlanc and, inexplicably, Gary Oldman.  The movie was savaged by critics and quickly forgotten by the general movie-going public.

Later on, in 2004, an unaired pilot was produced for the WB with a cast that included a pre-Friday Night Lights, Adrienne Palicki.

While it obviously remains to be seen if this version will end up joining the others in obscurity, this is certainly the most intriguing reboot of the show so far.
