Timeless is officially back from the dead!

“The War To End All Wars” effectively sets up the rest of Timeless season 2 with higher stakes. Rittenhouse is no longer just a fringe organization pulling the puppet strings, they’re an enemy with a face. Now that they’re on the front lines with the time team, things have gotten personal. Racing against the clock to save Lucy, the time team tries to reassemble before things escalate even further.

In the opening moments of the Timeless season 2 premiere, Rittenhouse blows up Mason Industries leaving the team stranded. Six weeks later, everyone is living in an underground bunker trying to rebuild. Rufus and Jiya are focused on getting the ship up and running but Wyatt spends his days frustrated by Lucy’s absence. No one is sure whether or not she’s survived, and the sense of loss is palpable throughout “The War To End All Wars.”

There’s never any possibility that Lucy is dead or ended up switching sides to Rittenhouse. Yet, the Timeless season 2 premiere gives Abigail Spencer the chance to keep the audience guessing. She’s heartbroken over the loss of her friends, desperate to prove herself and playing her cards close to her vest.

Her mother, on the other hand, is ecstatic at the family vacation they’re taking in the middle of a World War I battlefield. Joined by faithful Rittenhouse servant, Emma, the group is tasked with saving a military man before he succumbs to his wounds.

Things get a little complicated, with Lucy and Emma developing a sibling rivalry of sorts. If Amy is truly lost, this relationship could be a welcome surprise to the series. Both are willing to die for their own causes and go to extreme lengths. the Timeless season 2 premiere definitely gives a compelling reason to have Spencer and Annie Wersching interact more often.

Wyatt and Rufus find Lucy when she’s trying to snag a couple of grenades to destroy Rittenhouse once and for all. It’s a quick reunion, but effective in displaying how close the team has come. All three had almost given up hope, and if they had been one day later than Lucy would be dead.

However, they can’t sit around so the group splits up again to divide and conquer the mission. The boys are sent to blow up the mothership, while Lucy attempts to kill the wounded soldier. Unfortunately, her mother catches her, and she ends up having to return to the Rittenhouse ship once again.

The Timeless season 2 premiere also establishes one of the most important group of antagonists moving forward — sleeper agents. Wyatt and Rufus are stopped by a Rittenhouse general who keeps them from getting to the mothership in time. After killing their assailants, Wyatt discovers a cell phone with a manifesto in it. This finally gives the team new targets to face each week without having to come up with reasons for Flynn escaping. However, the biggest question will be if they can find someone to switch sides after living in the past.

It doesn’t look like Lucy’s mom will be abandoning Rittenhouse anytime soon, after making no move to protect her daughter from Emma. While she does get returned to the time team, she tearfully breaks down to Wyatt in the underground bunker. It’s amazing to look back on season one and realize that Lucy had her entire family taken away. Wyatt had been alone before joining the team, while Rufus has both Connor and Jiya.

Yet, Lucy had to say goodbye (probably forever) to her sister and watch her mother consciously choose an evil group over her. At least she has a burgeoning romance with Wyatt to look forward to despite the loss of her loved ones.

Last season, Timeless got off to a mixed start with the storytelling lacking confidence. “The War To End All Wars,” is an example of the series at its best with a bright future. There are only nine episodes left in this season, but fans should be sure to stick around if they’re as good as this premiere.
