Krypton to feature Earth and possibly the Green Lantern Corps

It looks like the new SyFy show Krypton will not only include Superman’s grandfather as the lead character but might explore other worlds and include some big-name DC Comics superheroes.

Set 200 years in the past, long before Superman was even born, Krypton tells the story of Seg-El, the grandfather of Superman — a man whose entire family was stripped of their rank when his grandfather was found guilty of treason for attempting to save the planet.

It also features a DC Comics superhero from our time — Adam Strange, a time traveler who goes back to tell Seg-El that the villain Brainiac also headed back in time to try to enslave Krypton and stop Superman from ever existing.

Now, there is a slew of news that makes it sound like the show will also include Earth, possibly the planet that Hawkman came from, and even the Green Lantern Corps.

Earth on Krypton

More from Show Snob

IGN reported that showrunner Cameron Welsh was at WonderCon and made some interesting comments about his show.

This first season of Krypton will include some scenes that take place on Earth in our present day. This has nothing to do with Seg-El but instead is about showing where his new friend Adam Strange returns to when his time in the past ends and he pops back to his own time.

"We will go to present-day Earth in this season, and see where Adam [Strange] came from – from Detroit."

This might be important because there is a reason that Adam Strange suddenly needed to go back 200 years to warn Seg-El of a danger that could wipe Superman from existence.

Remember, there is Superman’s cape that he brought back with him and if that cape dissolves, it means Superman never existed (it is the same theory from Back to the Future where Marty McFly fades from photographs if the past changes, meaning he was never born).

Now, the question is whether or not people from Superman’s history will show up on Krypton (the series not the planet) in the scenes on Earth. Could Lois Lane or Jimmy Olsen pop up? Maybe Lex Luthor?

Hawkman’s planet on Krypton

Welsh also said at WonderCon that he wants to visit planets other than Krypton and Earth. He specifically mentioned two planets — Thanagar and Rann.

First up, Hawkman is from Thanagar (Silver Age version) — a police officer on that planet named Katar Hol. Much like Krypton, Thanagar is an advanced society and like Krypton, it can take place 200 years in the past and still have advanced technology.

Hawkwoman was already revealed as appearing on Krypton (via Comic Book), so that could be where she shows up.

That second planet is Rann, which is where Adam Strange spent most of his time in the comics. As the first episode of Krypton showed, Strange was wearing a Detroit Tigers ballcap and seemed much like an Earthling.

However, in the comics, Strange relocated to Rann and that is where the teleportation device (the Zeta Beam) existed. Interestingly, despite Hawkman and Adam Strange being heroes (and Justice League members) in the comics, their planets are often at war with each other.

The Green Lantern Corps on Krypton

Finally, we have the Green Lantern Corps — the intergalactic cops that are tasked with protecting the galaxy. Now, there is no word on whether or not the Corps will appear in Krypton but Welsh has ideas if they do.

According to the Krypton showrunner, the Green Lantern Corps would be a “natural fit” on his SyFy Network series. On top of that, DC Entertainment VP Dan Evans said that the character of Omega Man could appear on the show before they decide whether or not to include the Green Lantern Corps.

Don’t expect Hal Jordan or Kyle Raynor though. The Green Lantern responsible for Krypton and its sector was Tomar-Re. In Superman #257, it was revealed that the Guardians knew that Krypton was going to explode and was watching over Kal-El (Superman), so there is a chance they had been watching his grandfather as well.

Krypton will return with its second episode “The House of El” on Wednesday night at 10 p.m. EST.
