Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 finale title teases ‘The End’

It’s no secret that the fate of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. could be in jeopardy due to low ratings.

The season 5 finale could very well be the end of the series despite the creative momentum. If ABC does go ahead and cancel the beloved Marvel series, the showrunners are prepared with a finale to tie everything up.

The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 finale doesn’t air until mid-May, but Spoiler TV has already gotten their hands on the title. With the possibility this might be the final hour for Agents of SHIELD, the episode is named “The End.”

However, the plain title can be left open to multiple interpretations considering the show isn’t officially canceled yet.

Could “The End” be hinting at a death for a major character? Throughout the second half of this season, it’s been revealed that Phil Coulson is dying.

He’s the man who embodies S.H.I.E.L.D., so there’s a chance he doesn’t make it. Future Yo-Yo did warn the team that their attempts to save him will ultimately lead to the end of the world.

However, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is also connected to the larger MCU and could be adapting based on the events of Avengers: Infinity War. If Thanos does succeed in destroying the world, the ABC show could return an entirely different world.

It would definitely fit the name — “The End” — since the crossover movie marks the end of Marvel Phase 3.

If this is truly a series finale, then “The End” might actually be more light-hearted than expected. Yet, rumors have already been circulating that the show will get at least one more season to wrap things up.

ABC has tried canceling the series in the past before Disney stepped in and forced them to renew it. It would make sense for them to intervene again since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is the only Marvel show to truly connect to the movies.

Luckily, fans won’t have to wait too long for an answer to these questions. “The End” airs on May 18, and ABC will probably comment on the fate of the series around that time. Here’s hoping the critical acclaim and loyal fan base will be able to keep the show going for another year.
