Cobra Kai renewed for second season by Youtube

As was previously reported, the Karate Kid sequel series Cobra Kai has boasted some surprisingly good ratings.

So it probably shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that barely a week since it has premiered, YouTube has renewed Cobra Kai for a second season.

FROM THIS POINT ON DETAILS OF SEASON ONE WILL BE DISCUSSED SO SPOILER ALERT

A second season is clearly something YouTube saw as a possibility.  Season one ended in massive sequel baiting with Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) deciding to open a Miyagi-do karate dojo with Johnny Lawrence’s (William Zabka) son Robby as his star pupil no less.

What’s more is the original Cobra Kai sensei John Kreese (Martin Kove) comes by to congratulate Johnny on a job well done and declaring the story of Cobra Kai has only just begun.

Blatant and slightly nonsensical sequel baiting aside, giving the show a second season had to be one of the easiest decisions YouTube ever made. It’s a high-profile sequel which managed to score high critical praise and a large audience for a relatively new streaming service.

Admittedly, the ratings are slightly inflated from nostalgia and the first two episodes being made free to watch, though that’s standard operating procedure for YouTube Red.

Even so, the numbers are absolutely ridiculous for a streaming service not named Netflix or Hulu.  It also helps that season 1 has been very well received by fans and critics, which is good since it’s been proven that merely relying on nostalgia alone is an unreliable strategy.

Season 2 of Cobra Kai is expected to premiere sometime in 2019. The original cast is expected to return and for those who finished the season, there’s probably going to be a lot more drama involved.
