The intense new teaser trailer for season two of The Sinner hints that it will be as nightmarishly unsettling as its premiere season.

While the trailer doesn’t give away too much information, we do know that this series will follow Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman reprising his critically acclaimed role from Season 1) as he travels back to his hometown in rural New York.

This season he is investigating a horrific crime – an 11-year-old boy (Elisha Henig) who has murdered both his parents without any provocation or motive.

Of course, there’s plenty of secrets and darkness hiding under the surface of the small town, which come to light as Ambrose continues to investigate the case.

He soon discovers that the boy he’s investigating is no ordinary child, and the town will go to great lengths to protect the secrets lurking within the community.

Although she’s an executive producer of the series, Jessica Biel won’t be reprising her Golden Globe-nominated role of Cora Tannetti.

Season 1 focused on the aftermath of a murder committed by Tannetti, a housewife who brutally killed a stranger in broad daylight, with no motive and no memory of the crime.

The series was the number one new cable series of 2017 and nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Miniseries or Television Film.

Derek Simonds will return as executive producer and showrunner.

Pullman will be joined by Fargo’s Carrie Coon, playing Vera, who “struggles between upholding the ideals of the community she leads and fulfilling her own desires”. Coon’s husband, actor and playwright Tracy Letts, will also be joining the cast as Jack, an old friend of Ambrose.

Natalie Paul (The Deuce) and Hannah Gross (Mindhunters) round out the cast; Paul playing Heather, a trainee detective who accompanies Ambrose on the case, and Gross playing Marin, Heather’s childhood best friend who disappeared from the town years before under suspicious circumstances.

Season 2 of The Sinner will premiere August 1 on the USA Network for an eight-episode run.
