History Channel has released the first trailer for their new UFO investigation drama Project Blue Book.

Project Blue Book is based on the real-life top-secret investigations into UFO sightings and abduction experiences sponsored by the U.S. Air Force between 1952 and 1969.

The new series from A+E Studios and Robert Zemeckis’ Compari Entertainment stars Aiden Gillen (Game of Thrones, The Wire, Queer as Folk) as Dr. J. Allen Hynek. Hynek was recruited by the Air Force to spearhead the program, which investigated and documented thousands of strange occurrences, many of which were never solved. The series blends historical, scientific, and theoretical elements drawn from actual program files.

If the first trailer does anything, it definitely gives you an idea of the tone the series is taking. It looks creepy and stylish, dark and mysterious, and more than a little scary. It looks like the scariest episodes of The X-files, but drawn from actual unexplainable events, which makes it even more frightening. The trailer is filled with flickering lights, stark settings, skewed angles, bizarre behavior, flashlights, frantic running, and crop circles. Sinister government agencies may or may not be involved. And it looks like there maybe be a skeptic/believer dynamic between Hynek and his military partner.

Based on this first look, I am very excited about this new series. The show fits into a genre that I particularly enjoy and is on a subject that I once spent a significant amount of time researching myself. Chances are I am familiar with more than one of the cases that will be presented in the show, especially if my hunch about some of the elements featured in the trailer turn out to be right. It also looks beautifully made and very stylistic. Plus, who can resist Aiden Gillen?
