Norman Reedus revealed that he and Andrew Lincoln originally planned to leave The Walking Dead together.

Once upon a time, Andrew Lincoln (Rick) and Norman Reedus (Daryl) had a pact to leave The Walking Dead together if and when it ever came time to move on from the show. It comes as no surprise really, since the two actors have one of the most legendary bromances in television history.

“We made a pact,” reveals Reedus. “I think it was like season 3 or 4. We’re like, ‘If you leave, I leave. Right?’ And that was the thing.” Season three was likely when the bromance started to bloom, with Shane’s death at the end of season two throwing Rick and Daryl together more as Rick took over as the leader with Daryl as his right-hand-man.

Those shocked about Andrew Lincoln’s announced departure from the series need not worry about losing Reedus too. Reedus also revealed that he’s breaking their pact and wants to stay on until the end of the series. It also seems that Reedus got a huge pay bump to keep him on the show and that Daryl will be thrust more into the limelight as he takes over more of the leadership responsibilities after Rick’s departure.

Of course, the circumstances under which Rick will take his leave remains a mystery, at least for now. Maybe his group will finally realize how insanely destructive he is and oust him from the pack. After all, Rick ruins every opportunity they have to live in safety and comfort because of his intolerance and inflexibility. Imagine an alternate series taking place from the perspective of those who encounter Rick and his group. Would Rick seem any less threatening to others than they are to him? While we can only guess as to Rick’s ultimate fate, we can take comfort that Daryl is here to stay.
