The Sinner season 2, episode 7 recap: ‘Part VII’

The season 2 penultimate episode of The Sinner exposes the season’s biggest mysteries and leaves us wanting more through the final moments.

The Sinner season 2 penultimate episode was an action-packed 42 minutes of O-M-G moments that had us hooked until the very last scene. Sure, some may have predicted the outcome or even guessed what or rather who was behind all the mystery, but it didn’t make the reveal any less shocking or exciting.

Before we get into the heart of the episode, if you have not seen tonight’s episode of The Sinner, turn back now because major spoilers are headed your way! The episode begins with the cops ambushing Mosswood with a warrant for Julian. If you recall, the last episode ended with someone abducting Julian and proving once and for all that the hooded figure was indeed real.

Naturally, Vera is pissed off that her “son” is now missing and it is no thanks to the people who took him away in the first place. But, come on lady, there is definitely something really sinister about Julian and I don’t care what anyone says. That innocent face does not fool me.

Ambrose’s investigation of the group reveals that by 5 A.M., Julian had gone missing. But something odd catches his attention as he searches Julian’s room–sunflower seed shells. This trail of shells eventually reveals that a camper van was parked outside and someone was stalking Julian. And he isn’t missing because he ran away, but rather someone took him.

Of course, no one seems to think Ambrose is onto anything because it’s not like he solved Cora’s cast last season or anything. What does the old man know, right? When Ambrose approaches Vera about the camper van, it seems like she knows who might have been in it. And if I’m being honest, it didn’t cross my mind to think that it was going to be this particular individual (even though it should have).

Thanks to an Amber Alert put out by Heather, highway patrol stumbles across the brown camper van parked along the freeway with no one inside. As the investigation continues, more and more information is thrown at us including Ambrose and Novack’s visit to a convent called Grey Daughters. It is here where Novack sees a picture of Marin on the board and learns that up until a few weeks ago, Marin was living here.

Marin moved to the convent three years prior and admitted herself to the recovery center. It appears that the random ponytail guy also made his rounds there and picked up some things from Marin’s room. A flashback reveals that after leaving the Grey Daughters, Marin went back to Mosswood to get Julian back except Vera wouldn’t let her and made her leave.

This is where The Sinner reminds us why it’s such an intriguing show to watch. Later that night, a hooded figure creeps into Julian’s room and we learn that it is Marin trying to take him away. However, she is caught by other members of Mosswood and escorted out. But there is one person that is willing to help her out–Bess.

Remember Bess, and her husband, Adam? Of course, you do! They are the same couple from the season 2 premiere and it is revealed that on behalf of Marin they were taking Julian from Mosswood and bringing him to her. Hence, all those Niagara Falls plans we heard all about.

As we know, Julian never makes it to Marin because Adam and Bess end up dead (it’s totally Julian) and then Julian is arrested which catches us up to present day. The next big reveal is that it was Marin who was creepily watching Julian from the camper, and it is Marin who abducted in the darkness of the night wearing a hood. It was always Marin!

Julian is understandably confused and freaked out over Marin and who she is, but in time she tells him everything and he starts to warm up to her following one of his infamous meltdowns. But because they pulled over on the side of the road and the cops showed up, they weren’t able to go back to the van.

At this point, Ambrose and Novack have put all the pieces together and Ambrose asks Novack to add Marin to the Amber Alert, which she does hesitantly. The history there makes it hard for Novack to separate everything going on because she is still riddled with guilt over everything that happened, and she knows getting Marin arrested would once again take away her dreams of being a parent.

During all this and one of Julian’s many panic attacks, Marin calls Novack to ask her to back off. Of course, this isn’t possible but it doesn’t hurt to try. It’s difficult to see how much pain and agony there is in the conversation between them because they are both helpless and not entirely wrong in what they are doing.

Novack is able to locate Marin’s location by pinging her cell phone which she finds in a trash can outside of a gas station. Considering they could be anywhere now, Ambrose and Novack begin driving towards the reservation surrounding the area because it is likely how Marin plans to cross the border.

The end of the episode leaves us baffled because it all happens so fast we can barely process it. Ambrose and Novack notice other cop cars passing them so they decide to follow which leads them to the motel that Julian and Marin were at.

Just moments before all of this, Marin is seen talking on the phone with someone and saying they have made it to the motel. Who is this mystery person? Who cares, because when Ambrose and Novack arrive at the motel–Marin is lying dead in a pool of her own blood. Uh, what just happened? Julian, that’s what (at least according to me).
