Designing Women returning to ABC
Designing Women is coming back to television and the timing couldn’t be more perfect.
The Sugarbakers are coming back in a revival of Designing Women!
For those who are under 30 and never heard of the show, Designing Women is a comedy series which aired on ABC from 1986 to 1993 and centered around four women and one man who worked together at an interior design firm in Atlanta.
Dixie Carter (Desperate Housewives) and Delta Burke (What Women Want) starred as sisters Julia and Suzanne Sugarbaker, (is anyone else reading this with a southern accent?), Jean Smart (24) played Charlene Frazier Stillfield, Annie Potts (Ghostbusters) played Mary Jo Shively, and Meshach Taylor (Mannequin) played Anthony Bouvier.

There’s no official word whether or not any of the original cast will be attached or make any appearances, but I can’t imagine no one shows up.
Unfortunately, some of the cast passed away since the series ended. Dixie Carter died in 2010, and Meshach Taylor died in 2014.
I saw Jean Smart on Good Morning America early this week promoting her new movie A Simple Favor, and she confirmed that it wouldn’t be a reboot so much as a sequel. The show will have a brand-new generation of Sugerbakers but with the same sharp, spitfire wit from the original series.
I was young when this show first aired, but I used to watch reruns because the Janine from Ghostbusters was on it. They touched upon a ton of sexual innuendos and political commentary that typically when straight over my head.
But one scene, in particular, has always stuck out to me. After overhearing a few pageant queens making fun of her sister, Julia confronts one and uses the line, “and that’s the night the lights went out in Georgia!” It’s brilliant!
The series and actresses were nominated for a ton of Emmys and Golden Globes, too.
I can’t wait to see what the new generation of Sugarbakers brings to the table!
