Escape at Dannemora season 1, episode 3 recap: Part 3

Things are getting pretty intense on Escape at Dannemora–and Tilly is smack dab in the middle of it all.

Escape at Dannemora is certainly getting interesting and complex as each week goes by. At times, it’s hard to believe that the story is based on true events. You start to wonder, dang, could this actually happen? I’m sure many aspects of the storyline are embellished, but it sure is an out there story.

This week’s episode focuses on Matt and Tilly’s growing relationship. Of course, Matt is just using Tilly to acquire the tools necessary to escape the prison but something tells me he’s enjoying the ride. Benicio Del Toro is killing it as Matt, and there’s something to be said about his subtle nuances and seemingly quiet nature.

Whatever it may be, Tilly is becoming smitten over Matt and enjoying their workshop sex along the way. Side note: How has she not been caught before this? It’s very obvious that she starts to focus her attention on one inmate at a time, and how does no one hear the moans? And most importantly of all, how can this be the first time her husband has come to hear of anything?

Escape at Dannemora tries to spice things up this week by starting a threesome of sorts. Not a literal one, but Matt suggests that David join the “let’s emotionally manipulate Tilly game”. So how exactly does he make this happen? He pushes David to hand over his sweaty shirts and engage in flirty conversation with Tilly any chance he gets.

To keep Sweat interested, Tilly starts to graphic love notes and snap some revealing pictures of herself. The middleman is David, of course. And he has absolutely no complaints because it means they are one step closer to their goal.

Last week, David asked Tilly for a hacksaw, and this week she delivers it to him via hiding it in meat. Also, why is everything so chill in this jail? Like, I don’t get it. If I’m missing something, someone please tell me.

Anyway, with the hacksaw in their possession, both David and Matt start sawing away an exit in their cells, which are now next to each other.

Eventually, they create a hole large enough to climb through after lights out. The exit leads out to the hallway that Matt discovered in the premiere.

Each night, the both of them go out into this hallway and try to get to the furthest point they can. The goal is to find an exit that is outside of the prison walls.

At some point, Matt tires and skips a night here and there, but David pushes forward. That is until he hits a brick wall that will require heavy-duty tools. All the while, Matt is messing around with Tilly and letting David handle the grunt work. If I was David, I’d definitely have something to say about that. But he says nothing, not even when Matt confesses he’s been having sex with Tilly.

Speaking of Matt and Tilly, Lyle comes across the painting that Matt made of their dogs. He’s perplexed and angry and immediately confronts Matt. But Matt is no fool and spins the story to say that Tilly wants to give him the painting as an anniversary gift. Come on, Lyle! Don’t believe him! Unfortunately, believe him he does.

Which makes me wonder why Gene (Lyle’s friend and coworker) won’t just tell Lyle that something weird is going on. Clearly, Tilly is not treading a careful path, and she was the one who asked Gene to deliver the meat to Matt. Girl, you goofing!

Escape at Dannemora is stepping up with the action, suspense, and drama of it all. And I’m looking forward to how it will all play out. And then once it does, I can’t wait to spend hours researching fact vs. fiction of the show–because that’s what we all do right?
