Elseworlds: Crossover will have long-term consequences in the Arrowverse

Elseworlds will affect the Arrowverse shows moving forward.

While the previous crossovers have had little impact on the Arrowverse, Elseworlds is going to be quite different. This year’s event will have all of the shows (presumably except for DC’s Legends of Tomorrow), suffer some long-term consequences.

In an interview with USA Today, Stephen Amell revealed the DC Comics producers gave The CW free rein when it came to Elseworlds. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering the Arrowverse has built up a loyal fanbase and an entire universe for the comic book titan.

"“You can have whatever you want. Which I don’t think has ever happened before. Bottom line, this was the most fun that I’ve ever had, probably by design.”"

However, the most important information from the interview was the reveal of lasting consequences throughout this universe. While it’s unlikely the shows plan to keep Barry and Oliver body swapped until next year’s crossover, it is possible Elseworlds will shape the future crossover events. Many fans have speculated the Arrowverse is working its way towards a Crisis on Infinite Earths arc. As one of the most infamous and largest events in DC Comics, the Arrowverse has built up their universe enough that it’s possible.

"“…and if you’re a big comic-book fan, you’ll be able to at least theorize about where that could be.”"

In the extended trailer for Elseworlds, John Wesley Shipp’s version of the Flash warns of an incoming “crisis”. Many fans took the use of this word as a nod to the future storyline arc.

Sadly, we’ll have to wait and see if that could be the next crossover event until next year. In the meantime, Elseworlds could be setting up a different kind of consequence. Quite a few viewers have been quick to suggest the Arrowverse could be altering the worlds so Supergirl and Superman will wind up on Earth-1. This would certainly make it easier for planning crossovers in the future, even just for another Flash/Supergirl team-up.
