SJ Clarkson to direct pilot of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel

If you were sad about Game of Thrones ending after its eighth season, you’ll be glad to hear that HBO is in motion working on something new for GOT fans.

According to Deadline, a pilot for a Game of Thrones prequel is in the works and will be directed and executive produced by SJ Clarkson. Previously, Clarkson has directed episodes of Marvel’s The Defenders, Jessica Jones, Orange is the New Black and Dexter.

She’s had also been set to direct an upcoming Star Trek movie, a sequel to Star Trek: Beyond before the project was shelved. She would have been the first female to direct a Star Trek movie.

IndieWire’s Liz Shannon Miller said Clarkson “has stealthily become one of TV’s most reliable directors in recent years.”

Showrunner and executive producer Jane Goldman will partner with George R.R. Martin to bring the series to HBO. The current cast of series regulars includes Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denis Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp and Toby Regbo.

Ackie will have a leading role in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX. You might recognize Jeremiah from Doctor Who, Henley from the Narnia franchise or Bower from The Twilight Saga.

This untitled prequel will be based on a story by created by Goldman and Martin and will take place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones.

According to Deadline, “it chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

Other executive producers on the show include Vince Gerardis (GOT co-executive producer), Daniel Zelman (Damages, Bloodline co-creator/executive producer), James Farrell, Jim Danger Gray and Chris Symes.
