ABC’s popular sitcom Modern Family is set to end after its 11th and final season.

ABC announced the news of Modern Family‘s upcoming season and its impending end at the Television Critics’ Association press tour. According to Deadline, the family comedy’s final season will include 18 episodes, with the possibility of expanding to 22.

Modern Family continues to be a ratings winner for ABC. It’s the network’s highest-rated sitcom and its second-highest rated overall (tying with procedural The Good Doctor, reality series The Bachelor, and fellow sitcom The Connors). The series has also taken home five Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, so it’s no wonder the network would want to give the series a proper send-off.

The comedy’s adult cast — Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, and Sofia Vergara — all recently renewed their contracts with the show’s studio 20th Century Fox. Co-creators and executive producers Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd as well as the show’s child actors — Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, and Rico Rodriguez — all negotiated new deals too. Some of these closed as late as the night before the announcement. Fortunately, everything worked out and the sitcom will have the opportunity to wrap up its story with one more season.

Of the renewal, the president of ABC Entertainment, Karey Burke, said,

"“Chris and Steve have created one of the most seminal and iconic comedies in television history. In its final season, there will be more milestone events that anyone who has been a fan of the series won’t want to miss.”"

Meanwhile, Lloyd and Levitan cracked wise about the news. Lloyd declared,

"“For 10 years, our characters have bravely faced turning points in life and moved through them to great personal enrichment; we have chosen a different path by doing one more season of Modern Family.”"

And Levitan added,

"“Even after 10 years together, we realized there are still some things our writers don’t yet know about each other’s sex lives..”"
