Shadowhunters season 3B, episode 14 recap: A Kiss from a Rose

Don’t be fooled by the title of this Shadowhunters episode. There isn’t as much romance as there is a betrayal for several characters.

Maia Roberts and Jordan Kyle are still trapped inside the pantry of the Jade Wolf after Heidi sent the New York vampire clan after the werewolves in the previous episode of Shadowhunters. The entire pack was killed and the vampires have finally left. But Maia is freaking out because they can’t break out of the pantry, and no one is going to come looking for them. For some reason, she doesn’t change into a werewolf and break down the door.

Maia and Jordan Make Amends

Simon Lewis asks after Jordan and Luke tells him that he heard from the Praetors that Jordan went rogue when he visited the vampires in the previous episode of Shadowhunters. Jordan hasn’t been seen since and is presumed to have gone AWOL.

As Jordan continues to bleed out at the Jade Wolf, he is very calm while though he and Maia remain trapped. So much so that he is able to calm Maia down. They reminisce about their lives before Jordan apologizes to Maia for turning her into a werewolf. Just as Maia forgives him, Jordan falls into a coma in her arms.

Simon and Luke reach the Jade Wolf in time to rescue Jordan, but Luke stays behind to finish the last rites for his pack. Unfortunately, the police show up and arrest him.

Izzy and Alec’s Investigations

Despite their mother warning them against pursuing rumors about the Clave, Izzy Lightwood can’t let the matter go. She wants to do an autopsy on Greenlaw’s body. Head of the New York Institute of Shadowhunters, Alec, agrees to it, giving her a 24-hour window to complete her investigation. Her autopsy yields results – Greenlaw had a chip inside him.

Meanwhile, Alec is still on the search for the Morning Star Sword. Luke Garroway brought him a lot of literature to read through. This is going to take forever, but Magnus Bane appears to ‘speed things up’ with his magic.

SHADOWHUNTERS – “A Kiss From A Rose” – Continuing to track down information on the rumors about misconduct at The Clave’s downworlder prison, Isabelle asks Alec for help. Meanwhile, Magnus succumbs to asking Lorenzo for a favor and Jace takes Clary on a special date. This episode of “Shadowhunters” airs Monday, March 18 (8:00 – 9:01 P.M. EDT) on Freeform. Magnus had been doing well without his magic, but it appears he hadn’t given up on getting it back. After being turned away by every Warlock in town, Magnus turned to his rival, the current High Warlock of New York, Lorenzo Rey (Javier Muñoz). Lorenzo surprisingly agreed to help Magnus, but for a price. With his magic now restored, Magnus is here to help. But what does Magnus owe Lorenzo? His beautiful New York apartment.

Magnus finds references to the Morning Star sword being sold to a mundane who was eventually buried with it. He and Alec portal to Belgium to retrieve it. They’re out of luck, however. Someone has left a fake in the place of the Morning Star Sword. However, the fake has an inscription on it that explains Jonathan’s interest in the item. With the Morning Star sword, Jonathan can summon an army of demons.

While Magnus may be content with giving up his apartment, Alec is not. He confronts Lorenzo about his need to humiliate Magnus, but Lorenzo doesn’t back down. Alec leaves with a warning:

"“You will slip up. And when you do, I’ll be waiting there to take you down.”"

All these confrontations may be for naught, however. Magnus is delighted to have his magic back, but it seems to be taking a toll on his body.

Jonathan and Clary’s Relationship

Jonathan Morgenstern is in New York and he is desperate for his sister Clary Fairchild to return to him. So much so that he has someone shape-shift into her. Realizing a ‘fake’ won’t do, Jonathan is intent on getting his hands on the real thing. Talk about creepy.

LUKE BAINES

The real Clary is spending the day with Jace Wayland at a skating rink. Jace is terrible at skating, and since he’s too pig-headed to admit it, he walks away to get himself a new pair of skates. That’s when he is attacked by Jonathan, who knocks Jace out cold and shape-shifts into him.

Jonathan takes Clary around town before finally kissing her. Clary immediately realizes something’s wrong. Disgusted by Jonathan’s actions, Clary pricks her finger to make sure her suspicions are correct. They are.

Clary calls Izzy and informs her of Jace’s whereabouts and switches on her own tracking rune. Izzy finds Jace and together they race to find Clary before Jonathan is able to trap her in his apartment again. Clary attempts to stall Jonathan long enough for Izzy and Jace to catch up, but when Clary has him pinned down, she doesn’t subdue him. Instead, she freezes and Jonathan escapes.

While Clary is still upset about letting Jonathan go, it’s great to see the show writers tackle Jonathan’s action as the violations that they were. Clary’s distrust extends to her not wanting to be intimate with Jace so soon after being tricked by Jonathan, and Jace understands. Shadowhunters hasn’t always been the most astute show when it comes to sexual politics, but it looks like the writing has matured quite a bit in this final season.
