Killing Eve will continue the chase into season 3!

Unsurprisingly, BBC America has renewed its hit series for another season after a successful season 2 premiere. Deadline confirmed Killing Eve would be back however, there would be some behind-the-scenes changes. Sadly, Phoebe Waller-Bridge won’t be making a return for season 3, instead the current showrunner Emerald Fennell will be passing the torch to Suzanne Heathcote.

If the first season ratings were any proof, Killing Eve is a major success. The show experienced growth in ratings every week, something which hadn’t been seen on other series. Last night, the show returned for season 2 and was simulcast on all of the various AMC networks. Sarah Barnett, the President of Entertainment Networks of AMC Networks released a statement regarding their pride in the series and to announce the renewal news.

"“We love having this show and the brilliant Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer and Fiona Shaw on our networks. Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Emerald Fennell have delivered two addictively entertaining seasons. As we did last year, we’re renewing Killing Eve right out of the gate, now with Suzanne Heathcote as lead writer, as a sign of confidence – we adore this show as much as our fans do. Killing Eve doesn’t do anything in a templated way; we love giving opportunity to three genius women to make their mark.”"

It’s worth mentioning that Barnett mentioning Oh, Comer, and Shaw, in the beginning, seems to hint that the latter will survive this season. Killing Eve has slowly been revealing some of the more mysterious parts of Shaw’s Carolyn and it’s exciting to know the show will continue exploring her backstory.

More from AMC

Suzanne Heathcote, who will be stepping in as the showrunner, has some big shoes to fill. She has experience working with AMC though, serving as a writer on the third season of Fear the Walking  Dead. Largely considered the best season ofThe Walking Dead spin-off, this is certainly a sign of confidence in her ability to handle one of the network’s biggest shows.

The current showrunner, Emerald Fennell, also released a statement about her time on the show and looking forward to the next season.

"“It’s been such an exciting year for me on Killing Eve. I think it’s cool that this tradition has been built into this untraditional show. Inheriting some of Phoebe’s characters was a treat – I can’t wait to see what Suzanne does next.”"

While Phoebe Waller-Bridge doesn’t seem to be coming back, she expressed nothing but excitement about season 3 and Heathcote. Apparently her Amazon series, Fleabag is finished with the second season so here’s hoping she will return in some capacity to Killing Eve.

"“I’m very excited that the Killing Eve baton is being passed onto another incredible writer for season 3. We can sleep soundly knowing these characters are safe in Suzanne Heathcote’s hilariously murderous hands.”"

Killing Eve took audiences by storm when it debuted last year. The delightfully entertaining cat-and-mouse chase has managed to sweep awards shows, with the series earning 15 BAFTA nominations recently. Undoubtedly, it will continue this upward momentum throughout season 2.

Unfortunately, there’s no word about what other cast members will be returning for next season. While anything is fair in love and war, there are certainly a few characters we’d like to see survive. Namely, Sean Delaney’s earnest and naive Kenny as well as his constant discomfort about learning of his mother’s escapades through the years.
