True Crime shows are again driving huge ratings. Shedding new light on old crimes can help in understanding present-day issues. CBS is trying some new techniques to give their new series, Interrogation, a chance to stand out.

Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil) and Kyle Gallner are set to star in a new series, Interrogation, on CBS All Access. True crime shows never go out of style, and the new approach will let the viewer approach the series as the interrogating detective.

Anders Weidemann and John Mankiewicz co-created, wrote and produced the show, as of name titled Interrogation. The inspirational source material is a true crime thirty years in the making. Gallner’s character is facing the charges of killing his own mother. A different interrogation will shape the narrative of each episode.

Another quirky series mechanism will be the ability to watch the episodes in any order. Much like True Detective Season 3, Interrogation will jump around the 30-year timeline. While Gallner will play the character through all timelines, he will learn what a one holds as a dear truth one day, could change a decade down the line. Anders Weidemann spoke about the new series to The Wrap:

More from Show Snob

"“This non-linear approach to storytelling is closer to how real detectives work, picking their own path through the evidence in a search for the truth.”"

The first nine of ten episodes will be released separately of the season finale. The season finale is the only episode being withheld until a later date. Presumably, this delay in releasing the finale has two objectives: give the public time to consume the other episodes, and to build suspense for a finale release. Look for other streaming services to try this approach soon.

Vincent D’Onofrio is cast as an Internal Affairs agent opposite Gallner’s accused-of-murder character. Without assuming too much, D’Onofrio will find the lines of his black and white cop world blurred by the events surrounding the interrogations of the murder investigation.  David Strathairn is cast as Gallner’s father.

Peter Sarsgaard (Jarhead, Magnificent Seven) will play a detective working the case. Kodi Smit-McPhee (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) is also cast as a leading character set to star in Interrogation.

Executive Vice President of Original Content Julie McNamara told Deadline:

"“Interrogation pushes the boundaries of what a television series can be with its truly unique format. It’s also a series that could only be executed with the technical capabilities of a streaming service, and we look forward to bringing its innovative approach to our CBS All Access subscribers.”"

True crime stories are one of the most reliable platforms for any network. It only makes sense to try new audience-building techniques using material that’s almost guaranteed to eclipse a certain floor of viewership numbers.
