Big Little Lies: Quick guide to season 1 before Sunday
The ladies of Monterey Bay are back for a second helping Sunday when Big Little Lies’ much-anticipated second season returns.
This show is awesome. The mostly female cast is just part of the formula that makes Big Little Lies such a success. Executive producers Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon has never acted or looked been.
Over two million people watched it, and that’s a number that has probably grown since 2017’s finale. And then it won all of the awards: four Golden Globes and seven Emmys.

It’s been over two years since the season 1 finale of Big Little Lies and if you haven’t had time to re-watch, here’s a quick rundown of what you missed to refresh your memory. And if you haven’t seen season 1 yet, you should. You can totally knock out seven episodes this weekend!
Here’s a quick recap of season 1 to refresh your memory for Sunday.
Plot
Five women, whose children are all in the same kindergarten class in Monterey Bay, California, are bonded together by one gruesome secret (that we’ll get to later). Another child hurts one of the little girls in the class, and she falsely accuses the new kid in class (and town) of hurting her.
The entire season teases the ending by showing interviews of the five women with police. We know something horrible happened at an event, but we’re not sure what and who it involves.

Madeline Martha Mackenzie (Reese Witherspoon) is the ring leader of the group. She’s a spitfire and isn’t afraid to tell you exactly what she thinks and get exactly what she wants. She’s a good person but flawed. She can be quick-tempered but fiercely loves her family. She’s married to Ed (Adam Scott), and they have a daughter Chloe (Darby Camp). She was previously married to Nathan Carlson (James Tupper), and they have a teenage daughter Abigail (Kathryn Newton). Madeline is hiding an affair she had before the beginning of the series because she loves her husband wants to make it work with him. And also, because Ed is seriously the best.

Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman) has a strange, toxic, and abusive relationship with her husband Perry (Alexander Skarsgard). At first, it seems like they live the perfect life and they’re immensely happy with their twin boys Josh and Max (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti). But it becomes clear that Perry is controlling, jealous, and takes pleasure in beating the crap out of his wife. She finally decides she’s going to leave him. Celeste and Madeline are best friends.

Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley) just moved to Monterey Bay with her son, Ziggy (Iain Armitage) to start over. Her past constantly plagues her, and the way she conceived her son, whom she loves more than anything. , and she’s fearful he will find her. Madeline quickly befriends her and takes her under her wing. But poor Ziggy is the boy falsely accused of beating on the little girl in class.

Renata Klein (Laura Dern) is the “I want to speak to your manager type.” So when her daughter Amabella (Ivy George) comes home with bruises, Renata went right to the school and demanded justice for her kid. Though, any mother would. She perpetuates her daughter’s lie by trying to get Ziggy expelled, and Jane outcasted from the town. Unfortunately for Renata, she has burned too many bridges and created too many enemies for much to be done.

Bonnie Carlson (Zoe Kravitz) is married to Madeline’s ex-husband, Nathan. They have a daughter Skye (Chloe Coleman). Bonnie is the complete opposite of Madeline, she’s chill, earthy, and friendly. At first, they seem at odds, but it’s obvious it’s more Madeline’s problem than hers. They have different parenting styles, but somewhere along the line, they developed a respect for one another.
What happened in the season 1 finale
Here are a couple of things you need to know:
- Ziggy did not hurt Amabella. It was Celeste’s son max who actually hurt her and it was something he learned from watching his father. So, even though Celeste and Perry thought their kids weren’t aware of the abuse, they were exposed to it.
- Perry is Jane’s rapist(Saxon Banks) the father of Ziggy. This is realized when Perry shows up to the big fundraiser and sees Perry for the first time the entire series. She’s terrified at the sight of him.
- Bonnie kills Perry. When Perry shows up, he’s angry that Celeste plans to leave him and he begins attacking her. Madeline, Jane, and Renata try to help, but it is Bonnie, who was watching from afar who pushes him down the steps, killing him.
- The five women are now bonded. They lie to the police, saying that there was a fight but that he accidentally fell.
Predictions for Big Little Lies season 2
- Now that Perry is out of the picture, Jane can breathe again and actually start over in this new town. I think she will maybe have a new love interest who can show her a different side of intimacy.
- With the addition of Meryl Streep playing Perry’s mom, Celeste’s life will get much more complicated. I think she is also relieved Perry’s gone, but will have to navigate life without him as Streep’s character tries to get to the bottom of what happened to her son.
- I think Madeline and Ed’s relationship will be better than ever, and she will try to be a better wife and appreciate him more. And just when they’re at an all-time high, he will find out about her cheating.
- Bonnie will suffer from guilt the entire season, and her usual calm nature will turn to turbulent and negatively affect her marriage.
