Yellowstone: Denim Richards promoted to series regular for season 3

Denim Richards, who plays ranch hand Colby on Paramount Networks’ Yellowstone, has been bumped to series regular for the show’s upcoming third season.

Richards’ Colby has recurred in both seasons 1 and 2 of the Kevin Costner-fronted series. He can be seen around the bunkhouse and out on the ranch with the other cowboys of Yellowstone. As a series regular in season 3, his role on the show is likely to become more sizable and distinctive.

Paramount Network announced Yellowstone‘s third season renewal on the day of the series’ second season premiere. A vote of confidence for a show that has become an important cornerstone of the new network.

The network’s faith wasn’t misplaced. Yellowstone‘s second season arrived to strong ratings and saw increased viewership over season 1 in key demographics.

The series’ third season is already filming on location with new recurring  cast member Josh Holloway (Lost).

Richards is in the unique position of recurring on a second series in addition to Yellowstone this summer: Freeform’s Good Trouble.  Richards will recur on that show’s upcoming second season as Elijah, a budding LA fashion designer. A very different role than Yellowstone‘s Colby.

While there are several rancher hands on Yellowstone, they generally aren’t the most noteworthy characters. They tend to appear as a group and serve as background for the daily goings-on at the ranch. The individual characters that have managed to stand out in that context have been the ones that have been given a bit more back story, such as young ranch hand Jimmy or squeaky wheel Walker. Presumably, Richards’ promotion means we’ll be learning more about his character and how he ended up on Yellowstone Ranch.
