Dracula: New series coming to Netflix starring Claes Bang

Dracula is being brought back to life by ‘Sherlock’ creators. Let’s look at what is known!

Based on the novel by Bram Stoker, Netflix and BBC One’s Dracula is slated to star Danish actor and musician Claes Bang as the blood drinker. The series will be in three parts, according to Radio Times, with each being about 90 minutes each. Also, according to co-creator and executive producer Steven Moffat, this Dracula story will not occur in the present day.

Not only does this give Dracula a chance to be closer to Stoker’s vision, but it will appeal to those jaded by the modernized retelling of older stories. Unfortunately, the exact premiere date is not yet known, except that it’s supposed to be released later in 2019! It’s safe to assume it will arrive in time for Halloween, though.

As mentioned, Claes Bang will be playing Dracula. Though perhaps not a household name in America, Bang has performed in Ruben Östlund’s 2017 film, The Square, which won the Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

Starring in iconic role like Dracula will increase his profile even more. This is especially true when tied with show runners like Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, known for successful projects like Sherlock and Doctor Who.

Dracula will also star John Heffernan (Edward II), Dolly Wells (Doll & Em), Joanna Scanlan (Getting On), Morfydd Clark (Romeo and Juliet) and Lujza Richter (Phantom Thread). Mark Gatiss will also act in Dracula, as he did on Doctor Who.  Given the presence of at least one Shakespearean actor, this may not be your average dime store Dracula story.

Netflix isn’t afraid of vampires

Can’t wait to feed your vampire fix? Not to worry! In addition to Netflix originals like Castlevania, Netflix has other vampire fare like The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Vampire Knight, Hemlock Grove and From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series. There are also vampire-themed films like 30 Days of Night, Byzantium, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, Dark Shadows, Daybreakers, Dracula Untold, Family Blood, From Dusk Till Dawn, He Never Died, Hotel Transylvania 2, Let Me In, Manhattan Undying, Underworld Evolution, What we do in the Shadows, and (if you’re up for it), a whole bunch of the Twilight films (if not all of them).

Of course, even when some of these vampire stories burn up in the sunlight (that is, expire from Netflix), another vampire project will soon rise to replace them. So, unless you’re ultra-discriminating in your tastes, you should be able to find a vampire tale that’s right for you.  Obviously, if you want variety, feel free to pair  these vamps with other horror films/series for a bloody good time!
