Emmys: 3 reasons to be excited about The Act’s nominations
The Act, the true story of a daughter who conspired to have her mother murdered, garnered a lot of attention. Now, that attention has brought Emmy nominations.
Well at least The Act was nominated for the fantastic acting.
Primetime Emmy nominations are out and the leading ladies from The Act are both nominated. Joey King is up for lead actress in a limited series and Patricia Arquette is nominated for supporting actress in a limited series.
While the acting was rightfully praised, the show as a whole was logically ignored when it came to outstanding limited series. Chernobyl, Escape at Dannemora, Fosse/Verdon, Sharp Objects, and When They See Us are all nominated for the top limited series award.

If you’ve checked out my review of The Act, you can probably see why. I’m sure the constant digs from those involved with the story talking about the inaccuracies didn’t help with The Act‘s Emmy campaign either.
It’s fine, though. We’re still here with two nominations to get excited about. So, ignore what it’s not nominated for, let’s celebrate what we have!
Joey King ascending
I did not expect King’s performance to be as fantastic as it was. I saw Slender Man, The Kissing Booth, Summer ’03, Smartass, and Wish Upon. It would have come as no surprise if King made a pretty decent career in romantic comedies and horror films.
Her performance in The Act, and her first Emmy nomination, hopefully opens a lot of doors for her.
Let’s be realistic, the chances of King winning are very slim. It’s a tough category, going up against Amy Adams (Sharp Objects), Michelle Williams (Fosse/Verdon), Aunjanue Ellis (When They See Us), Niecy Nash (When They See Us) and her co-star Patricia Arquette (Escape at Dannemora).
Still, the simple fact that she not only held her own, but arguably outshined the Oscar-winning, Emmy-winning, Golden Globe-winning Arquette is by itself an incredible feat.
I was already prepared to watch King in The Kissing Booth 2. But if any movie producers want to go ahead and cast King in each and every dramatic role, I think we’re ready for that too.
Patricia Arquette’s dominance
Speaking of Arquette, she nominated for in two separate categories for two separate shows. Plus it’s the first time she’s been nominated for an Emmy since 2007. This is awesome.
In addition to being nominated as a lead actress in Escape at Dannemora, Arquette is nominated for her part in The Act as a supporting actress.
She’ll be going up against Emily Watson (Chernobyl), Margaret Qualley (Fosse/Verdon), Patricia Clarkson (Sharp Objects), Marsha Stephanie Blake (When They See Us) and Vera Farmiga (When They See Us).
Both categories look tough for Arquette, especially considering the buzz around shows like When They See Us and Chernobyl (which received 19 nominations) were much higher than around The Act.
Still, it’s nice to see Arquette nominated for television awards again.
This. Just this.
Just watch Joey King’s reaction to being nominated for an Emmy and then calling Patricia Arquette. How can you not be incredibly excited for her?
The 71st Primetime Emmy’s will be broadcast on Fox on Sept. 22. For a full list of 2019 nominees, click here and check out the official Emmys website.
