Euphoria season 1, episode 5 recap: ‘03 Bonnie and Clyde

This week’s Euphoria episode, “‘03 Bonnie and Clyde” centered around Maddy is the show’s most intense episode yet.

Euphoria has finally gotten to the point of being interesting for me, even though the show is throwing nudity around way more than it needs to. Still, it has been going quite well.

“‘03 Bonnie and Clyde” is directed by Once Upon A Time‘s Jennifer Morrison, and it continues the trend. The episode is centered around Maddy (Alexa Demie) and her toxic and abusive boyfriend Nate (Jacob Elordi), who she loves no matter what. According to her, finding what they have (aka love) is really hard to do in this f—ed up world.

Last week, when we saw Maddy in “Shook Ones Pt. II,” Nate assaulted her. Her neck has been severely bruised. Zendaya‘s Rue narrates the fact that Maddy is scared of Nate, she even wants to punch him but she knows that no matter what he does, she will forever love him.

That statement is the notion on which “‘03 Bonnie and Clyde” is centered.

Maddy wanted to be Miss Universe and she could have gotten there had her mom not pulled her out of pageantry. But Maddy soon realized that she wants to do nothing and just wants someone who can give her everything. And Nate gives her that. He says he will kill for her.

Maddy has got it all: the looks, the talent, and the confidence. But Nate is where her biggest weaknesses and fears are, she is badly trying to hide the fact that Nate tried to choke her. She even wears a turtleneck and hoodie to class to hide the fact that she has been assaulted.

The school eventually finds out and there is a whole investigation which leads to the conclusion that Maddy has been assaulted by Nate. Even though Maddy still refutes it.

It’s a very realistic and emotional representation of abuse. It talks about the complex feelings of the people who have been abused. It is actually very similar to the way Celeste felt about Perry in Big Little Lies.

Anyways, soon Nate is called to principal’s office, his parents are there as well, and the police who take Nate in for questioning. The whole school sees Nate being taken out of school in handcuffs.

Nate is an incredibly smart guy, he is criminal-minded, to be honest. He immediately starts crafting a narrative for the incident to tell his version to the police.

He says he “doesn’t want to get Maddy in trouble” but he talks to them about the fact that she has been with other guys and she does an intense amount of drugs. He even hints at the fact that Maddy might be cheating on him during the night of the carnival and it could be that this other guy is the one who hurt her.

Maddy obviously has no idea about what Nate is talking about with the cops, she just wants to be with him. At the end of the episode, when he calls, she doesn’t even blink and goes straight to his motel.

It is good to see people taking Maddy’s side though and trying to give her the justice she deserves, even though Nate’s dad basically owns half of the town and is a very respected member of the community. Although, I still think that if it goes to trial, I can totally see it going in Nate’s favor.

Meanwhile, on the Rue and Jules (Hunter Schafer) aka now known as Rules front, Rue still does not know that Tyler is Nate who is blackmailing her.

Rue has not been doing drugs for two weeks now, she is in love with Jules and that is all that matters to her. She thinks that they are meant to be together forever. Jules is obviously on an emotional trauma since the last episode and she can’t talk about it to anyone. Everybody keeps telling Jules that she’s a “good influence” on Rue. And that she is the reason behind Rue’s happiness and sobriety and it is all too much to take in for Jules.

At the end of the episode we see Jules and Rue together where Rue is sleeping and at peace and Jules is lying wide awake in a tense position. She feels very distant from Rue and I can’t help but wonder whether Rue’s heart is gonna break soon.
