Lex Luthor is after the Outsiders in the latest episode of Young Justice: Outsiders. Can the team power through his insidious attacks?

During the UN Climate Conference at Bwundasa in episode 19 of Young Justice: Outsiders, Lex Luthor’s photo op is interrupted by assassins. While Ambassador Garth (from Atlantis) is grazed by an arrow, Ambassador Troia is attacked in her hotel room by the mysterious group claiming to be from the Bwundian Independence Front.

Attack on Bwundasa

While the attackers wish to de-throne the tyrant general in charge of the country, they are no match for Gar Logan and the Outsiders! Halo and Terra protect Troia and Beast Boy, El Dorado (Eduardo), Wonder Girl and Kid Flash form an assault team on the ground.

Though the Outsiders are on top of their game, Kid Flash is briefly injured because he’s always too cocky for his own health. Luckily the Flash is here to help. But what is the Justice League doing here? Apparently, Lex called the League and the Flash arrived to save the day. Suddenly the focus shifts to the League’s good work as Lex belittles the Outsiders on camera. What’s he up to this time?

While the Outsiders went in all guns blazing, Miss Martian was undercover and she apprehended one of the attackers. She found some kind of chip embedded in the woman. As the team return to base after the mission, the attacker – Leah – explains that she had no control over what she was doing.

Miss Martian was part of the mission because she had intel that an attack was imminent. Gar believes that Garth and Troia were specifically targeted, and is equally suspicious of how prepared Lex was. Was this a set up? Leah confirms it was.

And she’s right. Two of the BIF soldiers were Cassandra Savage and Lady Shiva. Lex was hoping to eliminate his ‘UN adversaries’ Garth and Troia, but his primary goal was to defame the Outsiders. Though the team is still popular on social media, a few more incidents like Bwundasa could very well turn the tide against the Outsiders.

The Outsiders Grounded?

Closer to home, the massive publicity surrounding the mission is impacting the team. Eduardo’s father is horrified after watching the scenes from the attack, especially the footage of Kid Flash being injured. Despite the team’s reassurances that Bart heals quickly, the parents of the Outsiders worry about their children’s safety. For now, Cassie, Eduardo and Bart are benched and their guardians read them the riot act for being so reckless.

In the meantime, Gar takes the rest of the Outsiders on a mission to Dublin to rescue a girl kidnapped by Ivo’s robot monkeys. As the team discovers Lex Luthors spider-bots, they are easily able to defeat Ivo and the robots. While they succeed in saving the girl, back at the base, Cassie, Eduardo and Bart make compelling statements about how risking their lives is nothing compared to the horrors meta-teens must face on a daily basis. This is, undoubtedly, a not-so-subtle dig at the American government’s treatment of immigrant children of colour at the border in the real world.

Halo’s Confession

Halo is still struggling to face her mortality and convoluted romantic feelings. She remembered her role in the death of the Markovian royal couple, kissed her friend Harper, and continues to act rashly because Dr. Jace is unable to find a cure for her cell damage. When Brion, Halo’s boyfriend, attempts to confront her about ignoring him, she brushes him off saying she isn’t a good girlfriend.

Brion isn’t easily swayed though. He pleads with Halo to explain what’s wrong, and she reveals her tryst with Harper. Brion believes they can move past this incident considering Halo only sees Harper as a friend. I guess Brion’s forgiving nature finally changes Halo’s mind. It’s time to lay the cards on the table.

In one breath, Halo tells Brion and Tara about Gabrielle taking a bribe to drop the security in the Markovian palace. Halo even confesses to knowing the information for a long time. On hearing this, Brion simply walks out, but Tara looks shaken. She reaches for her phone overhearing part of the conversation between the parents and Outsiders. Instead of informing the recipient about Halo’s revelations, she simply messages about the Outsiders being grounded.

Lex Luthor’s Plan

Whoever Tara has been messaging – be it Deathstroke, or someone else – they relay this information to Lex Luthor, who uses it as a stick to beat the Outsiders with. Lex claims the Dublin mission could have been handled by local police; instead, the Outsiders ran in and caused property damage. Lex reiterates Kid Flash’s ‘near-death’ moment, and brings up the issue of the Outsiders’ parents being against their involvement with this Young Justice squad. Lex’s plan is to create a hero registry, but Gordon Godfrey has news for him.

Seeing the innate heroism in their children/wards, the Outsiders’ guardians agreed to let them continue to be part of the team. Jay Garrick, The Flash and Bart even posted a video together claiming ‘We are all Outsiders’. Jay also shares a post mocking Lex’s plan to create a fascist registry. Looks like the show is not holding back on its commentary about modern politics.

The Outsiders are now more popular than ever and Lex is furious. But Lex can turn every obstacle into an opportunity. Time for him to ‘embrace and co-opt’.

This episode of Young Justice: Outsiders ends with a disturbing revelation. The Dublin attack was staged by Batman and his rogue team to lure the Outsiders out. While the Dublin mission was set up to make them look good, it would also show Lex up in front of the camera. Batman believes his actions were correct, but Diana/Wonder Woman is appalled. There may be no redeeming the team from creating falsities at such a grand scale.
