Euphoria season 1 episode 6 recap: The Next Episode

In its sixth episode, Euphoria still manages to deliver some shockingly horrifying scenes all while pushing the narrative forward in an episode centered around McKay.

Algee Smith’s McKay has just been kinda there in the fold during this entire season of Euphoria. He and Cassie are at this weird phase of their relationship where they have been trying to figure stuff out to move forward with their relationship. Their storylines have just been not as intriguing or gripping as the other ones in this show.

Euphoria tried to change that in its sixth episode titled “The Next Episode”. As the title suggests, it is basically just the next episode where they try to have McKay in the center and give him the spotlight, which in Euphoria’s defense he does get for a brief amount of time.

As usual, Zendaya’s Rue starts the episode by giving us a glimpse of McKay’s childhood. Ever since he was a kid he was training to go pro as a football player. Back then, he thought he would make it to the NFL if he kept going. But, right when he got to college, he realized that everybody was as good as him.

His ambition and aim are fading away and the only thing he now knows for sure is that he loves Cassie. But, he is even messing that up due to his toxic masculinity.

Right after he gets hazed by his teammates in a horrifying scene, he refuses to admit it to Cassie that it was traumatizing. Instead, he goes to the bathroom to cry and comes back to Cassie to have sex with her and prove that he is manly and this kinda stuff does not affect him.

Obviously, that pisses Cassie off. At the Halloween party, she tries to forget about it by casually hooking up with Daniel, who she almost had sex with at the night of the carnival.

Once again they make out. But just when it came to having sex with him, she remembered McKay and turns Daniel away, which leads to a confrontation where Daniel calls her a boring person and says that he is only interested in having sex with her and if any guy says that he’s interested in her beyond sleeping with her, then that guy is lying.

Meanwhile, I am enjoying Rue and Lexi the most right now as things between Rue and Jules are very complicated because of all the stuff that went down with Nate which Rue does not know about.

Jules gets really drunk at the Halloween party and Rue has figured out that something is wrong with her. However, she just can’t bring herself to ask Jules about it. We also see a sweet scene between Fez and Rue where Fez learns that Rue has been clean for quite some time now and he is happy for her.

A lot went down at the Halloween party but it still did not amount to much. Kat almost had sex with her lab partner. McKay almost found out that Cassie was making out with another guy but was stopped by Lexi.

Also, Nate and Maddy had their first public appearance in a long time at the party as Nate is now free since he coerced Jules into telling the cops that Tyler was the one who grabbed Maddy at the carnival by blackmailing her. He did the same thing to Tyler by blackmailing him for the pool accident and pushing him to confess. You might remember Tyler as the guy who Nate beat nearly to death. I really feel for him and he makes me hate Nate even more.

Towards the end of this installment of Euphoria, there is a hint that Cassie might be pregnant. That about concludes the sixth episode of Euphoria. Next episode is the penultimate chapter of the season.
