Gossip Girl reboot: New details on the series and if the original cast will return

Co-creator  Josh Schwartz talks the Gossip Girl reboot on HBO Max during TCAs, says it will “subvert the paradigm of the original.”

Just days after it was announced that Gossip Girl is getting a reboot, co-creator Josh Schwartz has finally opened up about his aspirations for the upcoming installment of The CW hit. Gossip Girl reboot was ordered straight to series for a 10-episode first season at HBO Max.

During the TCAs, Schwartz talked about the fact that he and co-creator Stephanie Savage were not interested in doing a version about the original cast’s grown-up life.

He revealed that he and Stephanie had already been talking about this for the last couple of years and the fact that more shows are getting revivals and fans have been loving the comebacks only helped in making the decision for a reboot clearer. Schwartz said that in today’s time we are all ‘gossip girl’ in our own way and they want to tell the story of how that’s evolved, morphed and mutated through a brand new generation of Upper East Side high school kids.

This reboot written by Joshua Safran will follow the chart of its predecessor, and will also be based upon the book by Cecily von Ziegesar. Schwartz said that Safran wanted to “subvert the paradigm of the original.” And that is what this show will be essentially doing.

He also revealed that he has already reached out to the original cast members Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, and Ed Westwick and said that they would be very welcomed if they want to be involved but he also understands if they don’t want to be a part of it. In a recent interview about his new show The Boys, Chace Crawford said that he would like to return for a reboot or revival based on the necessity of the plot.

Schwartz also said that due to the fact that the original show is in Netflix, he considered that they might make the show there but he realized that it just might be in HBO’s new streaming service soon enough and thought that this would be a perfect opportunity.

The show’s official synopsis reads:

"“Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The reboot will address just how much social media — and the landscape of New York itself — has changed in the intervening years.”"

Gossip Girl initially ran for six seasons during 2007-2012 on The CW and was an instant hit during the time where blogs and social media were relatively new.
