Treadstone: USA drops trailer for new Bourne Universe series

USA dropped a trailer for their new series in the Jason Bourne Universe: Treadstone. The super-soldier program is reawakened. It’s messy. We’ve got details!

The last time we saw Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), he was back on U.S. soil at the end of 2016’s Jason Bourne. He let the new CIA Director, Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander), know that he would not be drawn back into the Blackbriar or Treadstone programs or anything like them. And, it looks like the U.S. Intelligence Community moved on. Or, someone did. USA Network dropped a trailer for Treadstone. You can watch it below.

Per a report from Deadline, Treadstone will cover the origin story of the black-op assassin program that created Jason Bourne. It will also show us what the program is up to in the present day.

That’s interesting. As long as the first few episodes or flashbacks don’t turn into Operation Exposition, this is clever. Returning and new can get an in-depth refresher course on the plot and interworkings of the Bourne Universe. It will hopefully draw them into the story.

This will be the second Bourne related to project that will not feature Matt Damon since he assumed the role of Jason Bourne in 2002. The last, 2012’s The Bourne Legacy, featured Jeremy Renner (Avengers: Endgame) and Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener) as part of a newer, scarier program that made super-soldiers with chemicals.

It was ok. But, it kind of jumped the movie shark when I heard the lines: “The chems! I need the chems!” That made me giggle and imagine this was the action/adventure version of Glengarry Glen Ross.

The trailer does tread familiar ground. Pun fully intended. But, I have hopes that a multi-episode television series will be able to explain the story better than the movies by simply telling it over arcs. Let it develop. Don’t go hard on the exposition. If Treadstone can achieve that, there’s limitless potential for the series. And, the subject matter and action sequences are tailor made for USA.

Treadstone was created by Tim Kring (Heroes Reborn). It’s based on the classic Jason Bourne novels by Robert Ludlow. The cast includes Tracy Ifeachor (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow), Omar Metwally (Mr. Robot), Emilia Schüle (Berlin Station), Jeremy Irvine (Billionaire Boys Club), and Michelle Forbes (Homicide: Life on the Street). It is set to premeire this Fall.
