Is Ewan McGregor returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi for a Star Wars show?

New rumours suggest that Disney Plus is planning a new Star Wars show about Obi-Wan Kenobi, and it will star none other than Ewan McGregor himself.
Is an Obi-Wan Kenobi show in the offing at Disney+? Rumours of the great Jedi Master returning to our screens have abounded ever since the Star Wars prequel trilogy ended, but recent news from Deadline all but confirms that not only will General Kenobi lift his lightsaber once more, but that Ewan McGregor will be reprising his role as the titular character.
McGregor had giant shoes to step into when he was cast as a younger version of the iconic Alec Guinness character in 1999’s Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace, yet he quickly became a fan favourite and one of the highlights of the much-maligned trilogy.
A solo film about Obi-Wan Kenobi was supposed to be in the pipeline at some point, but the negative reaction to Solo: A Star Wars Story seemingly scuppered those plans.

Now, however, Disney’s own streaming platform, Disney+, has given new life to its sprawling range of properties.
Several Marvel Cinematic Universe characters have got a new lease on life on the platform with a slate of new shows, while numerous Star Wars series are already in production. Alongside Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian, a Rogue One spin-off with Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk reprising their film roles as Cassian Andor and K-2SO is also set to air on the platform.
There is plenty to explore in the character’s history during the nearly two-decade period when Obi-Wan was in exile on Tatooine. Perhaps we could see some cameos of other characters like Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon Jinn, Kenobi’s mentor, and the man who taught Kenobi how to become a Force Ghost.
While we have to wait and see if the rumours of McGregor’s return are true, there’s no doubt that his star continues to be on the rise. McGregor is set to star in DC’s Birds of Prey film as Black Mask, and also in the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep.
