Sacred Games season 2 premiere recap: Matsya
By Wade Wainio
The season 2 premiere of the Netflix series Sacred Games looks at Gaitonde’s crooked business dealings in Kenya. Also, Sartaj works to avert the apocalypse.
Season 1 of Sacred Games began with a cryptic phone call and ended with hints at an apocalypse. We learned that Ganesh Gaitonde (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a notorious gangster, was inreasingly involved with religious leader Guru Ji (Pankaj Tripathi). Now Inspector Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan) is trying to piece together the complex puzzle before something tragic happens on an epic scale.
There are vague details in this episode. We learn of a mission code called “Bibinka623,” which the Prime Minister’s office is aware of. Whatever it is, it doesn’t sound good for Sacred Games‘ characters!

This Sacred Games episode goes back and forth between 1994 and a later date. In 1994, Gaitonde wanted revenge on Suleiman Isa (Saurabh Sachdeva) and Parulkar (Neeraj Kabi). However, in this flashback he awakens on a small boat.
Being crafty, Gaitonde manages to escape, tortures a guard for information (without getting any), and tries to swim to all the way to Mumbai (which, before 1995, was still officially called “Bombay”). He fails.
Soon he is met by two people, with the more prominent one revealed as Raw Agent Kusum Devi Yadav (Amruta Subhash). She wants him to work for her in Mombassa, Kenya. Addressing his prospects of independent escape, she informs Gaitonde that it would take him 188 years to swim to Mumbai!
She seems well informed about Gaitonde’s world, notifying him that his gangster operations fell apart. In fact, Suleiman Isa himself fled the area while Khanna Guru Ji started taking control. In an interesting narrative wraparound, Gaitonde mentions how humans started as fish, which certainly relates to his watery surroundings in the premiere.
The future (part 1)
In a later time, Officer Sartaj Singh is tracking down details about a poster for a terror attack. Previously, we learned of deadly weapons linked to the NGO of Home Minister Bipin Bhosale (Girish Kulkarni), which are linked to Gaitonde’s so-called “third father,” Guru Ji. “Matsya” also reminds us that Sartaj lost a thumb, and he is still dealing with the physical pain of that.
Unfortunately, when he’s not tracking down a strange cult claiming it’s possible to conquer time, Sartaj is struggling to rekindle his relationship with Megha (Anupriya Goenka). He also gets a strange package for the deceased Constable Katekar (Jitendra Joshi).
Meanwhile, Malcolm Mourad (Luke Kenny), the man who assassinated Aghent Anjali Mathur (Radhika Apte) near the end of season 1, is fighting the Home Minister. Malcolm overpowers him, locking him in a room. The Home Minister escapes later, however a strange ambulance takes him to an unknown destination.
Malcolm goes on to violently threaten the life of actress Zoya Mirza/Jamila (Elnaaz Norouzi), presumably for information. However, he relents and leaves her in a traumatic state. Later, Sartaj Singh calls her.
1994 – Gaitonde in the past (part 2)
Gaitonde is now in Mombassa, Kenya. He calls Bunty (Jatin Sarna), wanting to reunite their crimal syndicate, but it will require work.
Raw Agent Kusum Devi Yadav briefs Gaitonde on her plan, which is to go after “Kenya’s Gaitonde,” named Mohammed Bobocho (Peter Mudamba). Bobocho’s operations are linked to the heroin trade in Afghanistan (and presumably other questionable dealings). Yadav wants Gaitonde to help them replace Bobocho with someone named Purshottam (Saanand Verma).
While Gaitonde wants to settle his score with Isa, Yadav insists the man has moved on, and that he should as well. She also says their own partnership with Gaitonde will be “90-10” (instead of 50-50) until he proves himself. Of course, if you’ve seen Sacred Games, you’ll realize Gaitonde likes to dictate his own terms, often referring to himself as a god.
However, as his options seem limited, he meets with Purshottam, though not much comes of it. So, to rile Purshottam’s interest up, Gaitonde informs Bobocho about Purshottam trying to cut into his business (playing the two against each other). Gaitonde also calls for Jojo Mascarenas (Surveen Chawla) to get Jamila over to Kenya.
It happens before long, and let’s just say she pleases Purshottam, getting him to side to Gaitonde enough to kill Bobocho in a most brutal manner. To rationalize the violence, Agent Yadav says Bobocho’s money funds ISI terrorism. Also, to reward Gaitonde, she gives him Isa’s phone number.
The future (part 2)
As Sartaj goes around asking about the radical pamphlet, they eventually end up capturing fleeing suspects. Sartaj gets his hands on a radical religious video narrated by Shahid Khan (Ranvir Shorey). Is Sartaj getting closer to preventing a catastrophe, or will it catch up to everyone sooner or later?
