Robin Thede and Issa Rae’s HBO comedy, A Black Lady Sketch Show, will be back for a second season!

A Black Lady Sketch Show is fantastic. So much so that this announcement surprised me because I honestly thought it had already been given a second season. It’s a no brainer that this show should continue on for as long as these women want to write sketches.

That said, Deadline has reported that I was incorrect in assuming A Black Lady Sketch Show already had a second season coming. Well, they reported that HBO renewed the show, but still.

We’re only four episode into a short first season, but I already find myself craving more sketches after each 30 minute episode. The series, created, written by and starring Robin Thede, effortlessly melds comedy with other genres like horror (in ways that probably even make Jordan Peele go, “wow, that’s clever“) and social commentary.

The show takes pride in its ability to analyze and satirize being black and being a black woman, especially in the show’s framing device that sees the four stars (Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Gabrielle Dennis and Quinta Brunson) hanging out at the end of the world. (Also, a season two renewal means I don’t have to hope they tell me why the world ended this season. I’m grateful for that. Let it be a slow burn.)

But the real reason I’m excited for a season two is that there are still some hiccups in this season. There’s still room for these writers to grow, which is insane considering how great the show is. There are a few sketches here and there that are only ok. With a second season to focus on what they do well and highlight their strengths, though, we could all be in for a wild ride.

If you haven’t watched A Black Lady Sketch Show yet, just check out this clip from the most recent episode. It’s (obviously) a riff on the classic Romeo and Juliet story, except…well:

dark. Next. 13 Reasons Why: Who killed Bryce Walker?
