Power season 6 premeire recap: Murderers
By Luke Lucas
The final season of Power kicks off with “Murderers.” Is Angela dead? Should Tommy have shot Ghost? Will Ghost’s world be the same? We’ve got the recap!
So, Angela (Lela Loren) got shot square in the chest by Tommy (Joseph Sikora) at the end of last season. Ghost (Omari Hardwick) is pacing the hospital waiting room hoping for the best, but when Paz (Elizabeth Rodriguez) comes sobbing out of surgery, it’s pretty clear—Angela is dead. The entire sixth season of Power is going to deal with the aftermath of Angela’s death, but “Murderers” gives us a feel for how far things could potentially go.
Tommy’s Mistake
Ghost has one thing on his mind: putting Tommy in a body bag. Tommy stops by Lakeisha’s (La La Anthony) to give her the murder weapon. He needs her to get rid of it. This doesn’t help Lakeisha feel a lot better. She was already worried that Tommy wasn’t going to survive the night before. Now, she’s being asked to hide a gun and Ghost isn’t even dead.
Later that morning, Cash (Denim Roberson) is getting ready to go to school. He asks his mom for some waffles. While Lakeisha gets the Eggos, Cash wants to know if she and Tommy broke up. Lakeisha is happy to see Cash have real feelings for Tommy because he’s pretty much her ride or die at this point. That’s a short lived happy moment, though. When Cash goes for some lunch money, Lakeisha frantically stops him. That’s where the gun is stashed. Yikes.

When Tommy gets home, he’s cautious. But, he’s still jumped by a waiting Ghost. The two roll on the floor in a fierce death match. Ghost gets in more punches. He’s way more motivated by hate. Tommy will never forgive Ghost for tricking him into his dad, but he feels a little better having taken Angela from Ghost.
There’s a gun bouncing around in the fight. Just when things are coming to a head, the door opens. It’s Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.). The gun slides to Tariq and he cocks it and aims at his dad and uncle and demands some answers.
Power is, at its core, a show about one big family. Ghost pops up and immediately asks why Tariq isn’t in school. It’s a legit question. He’s got a big old errand going on here. Ghost thought he picked the perfect time to kill Tommy. Tariq demands to speak to Tommy.
Ghost knows if he says no, he’ll probably end up killing Tommy or dead himself. No need to put any of that on Tariq. So, he gives Tariq tens minutes. On the dark side of the decision, that will also make Tariq one of the last people to see Tommy alive before Ghost tries to kill him again. So, Ghost isn’t above putting some heat on Tariq.
Tariq tells Ghost he’ll take his time. Tommy quickly and expertly disarms Tariq and tells him that he’s going to pay for that remark later on with his father. Tariq wants to know what’s going down, but Tommy plays everything off as a family disagreement for now. Tariq wants Tommy to do something with him. Tommy agrees, but he has to take care of some business first. That business is a meeting with Jason (Mike Dopud). Tommy tells Jason that he got his old crew back and needs product pronto. Jason want to make sure Ghost’s check clears first. They can meet later that night.
When Tommy meets with the old distro crew, he tells them they have to wait a little longer for product. Poncho (Frankie G) isn’t having it. He calls Tommy out. But, Black Grimace (Avery Mason) has Tommy’s back and pulls his gun. Tommy pulls his own gun. When Poncho calls Tommy out again, Tommy shoots him in the head. He gives Poncho’s boy Roberto (Johnny Rivera) a choice: stay with the crew or end up like Poncho. Roberto stays and helps the crew clean up what’s left of Poncho.
Now that early morning business is out of the way, Tommy meets with Tariq on a rooftop. Tariq wants to spread Kanan’s (Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson) ashes. Before he does, Tommy puts on “Crossroads” by BONE Thugs in Harmony and spreads some of Kanan’s ashes on his freshly rolled joint. Tommy tells Tariq that Ghost tricked him into doing something really bad that he can’t back from. Tariq isn’t surprised. Tommy asks Tariq how he’d feel if something really bad happened to Ghost. Tariq says he’s not sure. Before the two part, Tommy tells Tariq that he’ll always answer his phone for him no matter what. I think Tommy knows by now that he should’ve killed Ghost when he had the chance. But Tommy’s not sure how he’d feel about that himself.
You’re Dead!
Tommy had already asked Tasha (Naturi Naughton) for an alibi for Angela. She goes to Truth and confronts Ghost. He explains that if he would have killed Tommy’s dad himself, Tommy would have wanted him dead. Tasha accurately asks how that would be different than what’s going on right now. Then, Ghost actually tells Tasha that she doesn’t understand what he’s going through. He just lost Angela: the woman he loves. Man, alive! Tasha turns things on Ghost and asks about Terry Silver. Before leaving the club, Tasha informs Ghost that she’ll be asking for a divorce.
While driving Tariq back to Choate, Tasha tells him that Angela is dead. He doesn’t care, but she quickly reminds him that Angela is likely dead for helping him out. Tariq is numb to all of it. Later that night in his dorm room, Tariq calls Ghost. He tells him that he hated Angela, but he knows how Ghost felt about her. He gives his condolences. Ghost tells him that means the world to him. After the call, Tariq tells his roommate that he’s just trying to appear loyal. Uh oh.
While Ghost was getting that condolence call from Tariq, he was loading his clip. He’s on his way to kill Tommy. He let that check for Jason clear. All he had to do was wait for Tommy to show up. When he does, Jason pick pockets Tommy’s keys during an awkward hug. He has a lackey drive Tommy’s mustang in the lot. Ghost lights it up. There’s a dead body in it. But it’s not Tommy. Jason tells him to get his affairs in order. After Lakeisha tosses the gun, she returns home. Tommy shows up and admits he regrets not killing Ghost when he had the chance. Lakeisha vows to stay with Tommy.
The Law Lost
Before getting fired for the botched investigation into Ghost, Tameika (Quincy Tyler Bernstine) reacts to Angela’s death by announcing what we all know—their office is one dangerous place to work. The new boss, Jacob Warner (Evan Handler), seems no nonsense. He wants to fire Saxe (Shane Johnson) before Saxe admits to leaking information about a witness to Joe Proctor (Jerry Ferrara).
Both Warner and Saxe exert pressure on Proctor to turn state’s witness, but Proctor refuses. I’m not sure how it would help in any way, but Saxe convinces Paz to let the state perform an autopsy on Angela. I don’t know what evidence they could find. It seems like it was just a reason to show Angela in a body bag. That was some sad business.
So, it’s all out war on Power! Did you like “Murders?” let’s discuss in the comments!
