HBO renews The Righteous Gemstones for second season

Brand new hit HBO comedy series from Danny McBride, The Righteous Gemstones, has already been renewed for its second season, before the first has finished.

Comedic televangelist show The Righteous Gemstones will be back with season two, HBO has confirmed, according to Deadline. Danny McBride created the television series which is shot in Charleston, South Carolina. I have very much enjoyed this clever, well-observed creation.

McBride thankfully also stars in the hit program, along with much-loved veteran actor John Goodman, the tremendous Walton Goggins and the hilarious Adam DeVine.

Evidently, McBride is known for his daring and outlandish humor. At the heart of this particular effort are a fictional, world-famous and rich evangelical family called the Gemstones. Eli is the patriarch of the clannish group; his son Jesse is the heir apparent, with ridiculous brother Kelvin and devious sister Judy waiting in the wings.

More from Show Snob

Plots and schemes already uncovered in The Righteous Gemstones include: embezzlement, fraud, bribery, intimidation, inveigling and attempted murder – and that’s just the church! Local, smaller evangelist churches are also involved, though they are now presumably banding together to stop the rise of the nefarious Gemstone empire.

Show Snob is covering the show, which has only been running for just over three weeks, with recaps and reviews. My fourth recap will be available tomorrow in the HBO section. Obviously the run-throughs serves as explanation pieces, too.

A winning team

Rough House Pictures consists of McBride, as well as Jody Hill and David Gordon Green, they have combined with the television channel twice before: for Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals. Goggins also starred in the latter with McBride. Green and Hill direct most of The Righteous Gemstones.

Deadline recently quoted EVP of HBO Programming, Amy Gravitt, as saying this about the next installment:

"“Danny [McBride], Jody [Hill] and David [Gordon Green] are among our favorite collaborators and we’re thrilled that their take on a family comedy has been met with such enthusiasm.“We cannot wait to share the next steps in the Gemstone family’s epic journey. Hallelujah!”"
