American Horror Story: 1984 season 9, episode 5 recap: Red Dawn
By Ariba Bhuvad
American Horror Story just revealed that Camp Redwood is…
American Horror Story keeps getting more and more interesting as the episodes go on—finally. I’m so ecstatic that it’s revisiting what made this series so good, to begin with. This week’s episode brought a huge revelation in regards to Camp Redwood, and I must say, I was fairly surprised.
Donna aka Fake Nurse Rita’s past is revealed at the beginning of the episode, and it’s no wonder she behaves the way she does. It turns out her father was a serial killer who killed himself in front of her after she learned of his dark secret. That explains her obsession with serial killers!
In the present-day, Donna sees her father once again moments after Richard Ramirez rises from the dead. At this point in the episode, there are so many unanswered questions, but rest assured, they are all answered by the end.

You all remember Ray, right? The one who had his head decapitated while trying to run away from Camp Redwood? Well, for some odd reason, he’s back and catches Brooke’s attention immediately. The two form a bond rather quickly as Brooke opens up about her past and then loses her virginity–to a ghost.
Unfortunately for Brooke, post-coitus, she goes to grab a drink from the fridge and discovers Ray’s severed head inside. Clearly something is not right so Brook hopes to find comfort with Montana, who is just livid with Brooke’s existence in every way.
She’s so over trying to find a way to kill Brooke that she comes totally clean about who she is and how she intended on having Richard kill Brooke.

American Horror Story: 1984 finally brings us to a new day as a bus of campers arrives to kick off their summer. Little do they know that the entire camp is riddled with blood and dead bodies. The first thing they see? Bloody Brooke standing over Montana’s body. The cops finally show up and arrest Brooke while Richard and Mr. Jingles set off to Los Angeles. Because, why wouldn’t they?
A confused, perplexed Ray is still roaming about Camp Redwood the next morning when one of the paramedics finds him. He’s quickly escorted onto the ambulance, however, as soon as they exit the camp, he finds himself back inside. Wait, what?
Out of nowhere, the hitchhiker from the beginning of the season and Montana (who has just shot a cop) appear out of nowhere. Aren’t all these folks supposed to be dead? Well, it turns out that not only are they actually dead but Camp Redwood…is PURGATORY.
With that big reveal, we head into American Horror Story’s 100th episode next week!
Be sure to tune in every Wednesday on FX to watch new episodes at 10 PM EST!
