Netflix has renewed Raising Dion for a second season, plus we’ll look at some facts related to the series.

According to Deadline, Raising Dion ranks #1 as the “most popular kids and family series for [2019].”  It’s no surprise then that it’s being renewed, partly for its appeal to general audiences.
Raising Dion stars Ja’Siah Young as Dion Warren, an 8-year-old boy with superpowers. It also stars Alisha Wainwright as Nicole Reese, his mother, Michael B. Jordan as Dion’s deceased father, Mark Warren, and Jason Ritter as Pat Rollins, a biotech engineer and a mentor to young Dion. The series is based on the comic book written by Dennis Liu and illustrated by Jason Piperberg.

What is known about season 2

There aren’t many details about season 2 yet, as the news is still quite fresh. However, it will apparently have 8 episodes averaging anywhere between 40 to 60 minutes in length. Also, Young and Wainwright will most certainly reprise their roles.  There is no word yet regarding additional cast members for the second season.  Executive Producers include Dennis Liu, Carol Barbee, Michael B. Jordan, Charles D. King, Kim Roth, Poppy Hanks, Kenny Goodman, and Michael Green.

4 interesting facts about ‘Raising Dion’

1. Currently (as of January 5th, 2020), the IMDb page for Raising Dion has “non-comic book superhero” for its main plot keyword. This is inaccurate, however, as the series is definitely linked to a comic book (as noted earlier).

2. Though it’s early in his career, Raising Dion is not Ja’Siah Young’s first role. He has credits for appearing on Billy on the Street and appears uncredited in Rough Night, which is oddly about a bachelorette party gone awry.  Young is also to appear in Joshua Newton’s Nicole and O.J., which is described as a “Satirical conspiracy thriller revealing the relationship between O.J. Simpson and Nicole Brown Simpson.”

3. Raising Dion also stars Sammi Haney, whose DisabilityShirts company “provides themed apparel and products for people with disabilities (and their parents and supporters) in a mission to spread awareness, acceptance, and love for the special needs community.”

4. The comic book has been described by The Guardian as “a diverse comic book that turns its back on superhero tropes.”  Nevertheless, the Netflix series by no means totally sidesteps comic book-isms. If you were to look at other famous superheroes, most of them have humble origins not entirely unlike Dion’s. This is especially true in the case of Spider-Man, who struggled to pay the rent and was often bullied in high school for being a misfit.  Dion and his mom face some of the same issues. Also, somewhat like The Incredible Hulk’s Bruce Banner, he sometimes has difficulty controlling his powers.  Additionally, The X-Men frequently deals with heavy topics such as genocide, making it potentially more profound than non-fans think.
